Seven Highway Bids Awarded
In Camp Adair Area; 12th
Street Paving Set by Board
PORTLAND, June 4 -&)- The Oregon state highway com
mission, gearing its road program to the nation' war effort,
approved contracts totalling $1,300,000 but rejected a $522,918
job for the Camp Adair area.
The commission awarded, or referred to the state highway
engineer with power to award, contracts for rpvpti fpWni a

highway to serve the army can
tonment in the Corvallis area.
The rejected bid was submitted
by McNutt Bros., Eugene, for
2.52 miles of grading and 9.08
miles of paving on the highway
between Monmouth and the Ben
ton county line.
Four additional contracts
awarded or referred were for
federal aid projects to facilitate -handling
of increasing- shipyard
traffic in the Portland area.
Two contracts were for im
provement of the Willamette
highway In Lane county.
Wartime expenditures, said the
commission in a statement,- will
be confined to "a3riunUtration,
urveys, preparation of plans and
acquisition of right-of-way for
post-war work, and essential
maintenance of the present high
way system."
All jobs not essential to the war
effort should be suspended for
the duration, the commission said.
The commission will confer
with the state land department
some time before its next meet
ing on leasing to private mining
interests chrome-bearing sands of
southern Oregon beaches.
The commission withdrew a
$1300 grant to state-owned radio

needed for logging operations in

Two Convicted
Of Espionage
LOS ANGELES, June 4-P)
Dr. Hans Helmut Gros, 34, German-educated
native of Minneap
olis, and his Kansas-born, Los
Angeles-educated wife, Prances
Goellert Gros, 31, were convicted
of espionage Thursday.
They are liable to maximum
sentences of 20 years each, and
Gros to five more for conviction
on a second charge of failing to
register as a foreign agent.
