Working Mothers'
Problems
By MARGARET KERNODLE

Who's going to take care of
the children?
That' the nation's No. 1 prob
lem as millions of American
mothers prepare to go into war
industries, taking the places of
men who are called to fight.
The tmswer is more and
better day nurseries in every
community.
Paving the way for adequate
child care throughout the land
is the Committee for the Care
of Young Children, with head
quarters in New York now pro
moting legislation, surveys and
planning for modern day nurs
eries. The result should be a
national boom in better care
for babies.
Communities planning child
care centers are urged to start
with a survey conducted along
census lines, . to ascertain the
number of working mothers,
ages and number of children,
and tise number of mothers who
weald be willing to- work if
aupei vised care were provided
xor ineir cmldren.

it is possible to secure govern
ment aid for nurseries through
the Lanham act which has ap
propriations for defense area
aids.
Two kinds of day nurseries
are considered: 1. Neighborhood
cooperatives. 2. Extensions of
present private nurseries. Both
require trained professional and
volunteer supervisors and teach
ers. Cooperatives, with mothers
sharing costs for establishment
as well as maintenance, trv to
secure a two-story neighborhood
house near., a. play around, esti
mate about $200 for cost of
equipment including blankets
ana cots, playthings, kitchen,
laoies and chairs for 30 chil.
dren. Youngsters come with
health certificates from family
aociors but the cooperative gets
neighborhood physicians for
health check-ups. In many cases
uirl Scouts or trained neighbor
hood volunteers take the chil
dren to and from the nurseries.
often care for them until the
mother comes home.
