Hale America Open Hailed As Success NEW YORK, May 7.-(P)-With such masters as Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Craig Wood, Bobby Jones, and many others already entered and more coming every day, the Hale America national open golf tournament not only positively will be held June 18-21 at Chicago but it promises to be a glowing success, the United States Golf association said Thursday. The announcement came in the form of a refutation of a floomy prophecy by President Ed Dudley of the PGA at Phil adelphia that the event might be cancelled for lack of Inter est. It seesos that bis; Ed was bine because only about 209 en tries were in the box at this time, about half of them ama teurs. The tournament is being spon sored jointly by the USGA and the PGA, with Francis Ouimet of Boston, chairman of the joint committee. Local and sectional qualifying rounds are to be held all over the country, with net proceeds both from those and the tournament proper going to the navy relief society and the USO. Entry fees will be turned into war bonds. Columbia Levee Request Denied WASHINGTON, May 7.-(P)-The board of army engineers in formed Senator McNary (R-Ore) it had disapproved the request of the Columbia drainage district No. 1 that levees along the Co lumbia river in Multnomah and Columbia counties, Oregon, be improved to prevent floods. The district urged the work to save farm land being flooded and Chalky Wright Stops Lulu's Win Streak NEW YORKy May 7-()-Lulu Costantino, pride of the east side, came to the end of his long vic tory string Thursday night when he lost an eight-round decision to Chalky Wright of Los Angeles, New York-accepted featherweight champion, before 6000 at St Nicholas arena! Manning Manages Silverton Sox; Sched Announced SILVERTON Playing Mana ger Ken Manning will again han dle the reigns of the Silverton Red Sox in State league play this season, but just who else will play for the Red Sox has not been given out by W. L. McGinnis, dub manager. A group of young ballplayers are being looked over, however, and they are getting practice on their respective school teams, according to those in the know.
