SCIO Compliance with a re
cent request by the state supreme
court library for a filed copy of
the Scio city charter is to be con
sldered by the municipal commis
sion at the meeting Monday night
It is said by some that the only
genuine, authentic and officially
certified copy of the charter ex
tant is now on file at Salem.
Several inches of snow fell on
timber workers in the foothills
east of Scio a week ago, driving
some of the fallers from the
woods. In some localities the snow
melted as it felL
Work in an army hospital in
Texas is said to have been assign
ed to Otis Zink upon his recent
recovery from mumps. Zink was
a member of a recruit crew re
cently leaving Scio.
Mrs. Rolla Shelton and Mrs
Jennie Johnson are to be co-hostesses
to the Scio Garden club at
. the Shelton home May 5.

Mother and Daughter banquet was
held Thursday at the Turner
Christian church, under the spon
sorship of the Sisterhood mem
bers. Rev. and Mrs. Gene Robin
son headed the program com
mittee and Mrs. E. J. Gilstrap was
chairman of the banquet com
mittee. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fowler and
Helen, Delbert, Ronald and Law
rence arrived Saturday from Ko
diak, Alaska, where Fowler has
been employed in defense work
for the past year. Sunday they
visited in Turner at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Robertson.

May Day Fete
Planned at e
Jefferson v
JEFFERSON An outstanding
event of this week of the Jeffer
son schools is the May day festi
val which will take place today in
the school gymnasium at 1
o'clock. All schools in the outly
ing districts are invited.
The program will include selec
tions by the school band under the
direction of Mrs. Luper, while
Queen Betty Hart and her court
take their places on the platform.
The court will consist of King
Frank Gilmour, Princes Jack Cos
telow and Don Gilmour, Princesses
Ruth Overholser and Frances Ho
ven; flower girls, Peggy Sherman
and Mary Hart; train bearers,
Anne Jones and Theresa Voss and
crown bearer, Robert Beal. j
There; will also be the folk
dances and the winding of the
May pole. The program will close
with band selections.
A baseball game is scheduled
between the alumni and the high
school at 2:30 o'clock. The alumni
banquet will be held in the home
economics room of the school
building at 6 p.m.

Lukes hall. The theme will be pa

Scio Man Pays
Canada Visit
SCIO S. Krcek accompanied
his son, Victor, and family to
Windsor, Ont., Can., for an indef
inite stay, but may visit Scio in
July, it was stated.

have lived at Scio for several
months, Soderlind being employed
in timber work, plan to return
this week to Yacolt, Wash.

course is to be completed May 18,
under tutorship of Dr. W. P,
Goulding,- Scio, who also is con
ducting an advanced course

MILL CITY Mrs. James
Poole was selected by the board
of officers and congregation of
the Church of Christ to become
the representative of the Nation
al Benevolent association to i suc
ceed Mrs. Pauline Chance. !
Mrs. Chance has accepted a
position in Portland and left for
that city with her two daughters,
Jane and Eunamae.
Mrs. Chance has been active
in the Church of Christ for years
and at the time of her leaving,
in addition to representing the
National society, was superinten
dent of the Sunday school and
the Junior Endeavor society and
clerk of the church. ;
Mrs. Elizabeth Sherwood gave
an address in the Church of
Christ Sundays on "Hawaii in the
Making," in which she showed
the origin of the people j from
physical, anthropology, language,
botany and zoology evidence, and
that the Polynesian ancestors
came from southeast Asia and
worked east on the trail bf the
rising sun. I

Catherine McCraw, 84, who died
Thursday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Sarah Williams.
Rev., H. S. Fulton of the Church
of God will officiate. Interment
will be at Heppner, Ore.
Mrs. McCraw was born in North
Carolina February 8, 1858.
She is survived by four sons,
Roby,Nampa, Ida., Dixie and Wy
att, both of New Plymouth, Ida.,
and Troy, Portland, and two
daughters, Bettie Hawks, Virginia,
and Sarah Williams, Woodburn.

reported steelhead salmon in the
dam at Scio this week. They
have been coming in from the
ocean for. .some time to spawn

streams. .
Budget ordinance is to be con
sidered by the Scio council May
4. Report of the recent budget
committee will probably be adopt
ed in the absence of request for
change. Ban of fireworks in the
city during the war may be offi
cially enacted, it is stated.
The freak lamb at the Jim
Oupor farm near, Scio still retains
its two' extra ' front legs and is
making normal growth, it is
stated.

Schuli is a brother of Mrs. J. H
Taylor. He expects to be called

Silverton to holders of depositors
certificates of the ' old Coolidge
and McClaine bank which closed
in 1934. This dividend, 5 per cent
