charged that "gross carelessness
and utter violation of the rules
of common sense" by employes of
a drydock company were the
"sola cause of the are which
wrecked the 860,000,000 luxury
liner Normandle. At the same
time Secretary of the Nary Frank
Knox said two officers entrusted
with spedfle phases of the liner's
conversion failed to take ade
quate steps to insure its safety.

IChief Resigns
SILVERTON Victor Gross-
nickle, chief of police at Silver-
ton for the past two years, has
resigned to take effect May 1.
He has accepted a position with
the state police department His
successor at Silverton bad not yet
been named late Monday.
Grossnickle stated that he
would remain on at Silverton un
til a new man- was established.
