Onion Growers in Control Area
Urged to Abide by Regulation
Onion growers who are farming in the vellow dwarf mntml
area, which was set up by the state department of agriculture
after a hearing at the courthouse last fall, and who have not
uesuujeu onion cuiis ana waste onions should do so at once in
oruer to preveni ine spread of the
yellow dwarf disease from the
cull piles to the new crop, which
is now coming up on Lake Labish,
states Robert E. Rieder, acting
county agent . . . ' :
A quarantine order was set up
last fall at the request of a com
mittee of onion growers on Lake
v Labish after investigation de
termined that the disease threat
ened the industry and in order to
prevent further spread it would
be necessary to destroy all cull
onions and volunteers and to pro
hibit planting of onions within a
radius of a mile of Lake Labish
except by planting seed. This was
, necessary because the disease
over-winters in the bulbs and vol
unteer onions but is not carried
by the seed. . -
Growers in general in the area
and on Lake Labish have abided
i. by the regulations of quarantine
order' but individual cases of vi
olation are known. It is hoped
; that these . growers, many of
which live on the lake, will de
"stroy volunteer onions, culls and
waste onions and not plant onions
from bulbs in order that they may
not be liable for prosecution under
the quarantine order.
It is expected that an inspection
of the control area will be made
by the representatives fill the state
