Five Willamette Students Get
Awards for Graduate Study
Five. Willamette university senior students, have been of
fered 'fellowships, scholarships and teaching assistantships for
graduate work at Yale and Syracuse universities, Iowa, Washington-
and Oregon State colleges. -N-- ;

teaching fellowship in sociology''

which covers the expenses of a
full year of graduate work, part

- Gene Huntley of Salem has re
ceived a fellowship In economics
Co Syracuse university. New York,
which includes , tuition and all
fees. He also received word this
week from the '.United States civil
service commission of his eligi
bility for the position of. junior
professional assistant In econom

William Evans of Salem and
Arthur Rathkey of Tenmile have
been awarded teaching assistant
ships In chemistry at Iowa State
college and Oregon State college
respectively. They 'are one year
renewable teaching fellowships
including expenses , of graduate
work, fees and a monthly salary
for living expenses.
WinEeld Ache? of Oregon City
has received a tuition scholarship
to the Yale School of Law and
will' enter the summer term on
June 13. He is a senior In public
administration. Although the
scholarship is for but one year it
may be extended to cover" the
entire course.

Garden Is Plea of PTA Group
SILVEKTON One row of the Silverton victory gardens will
be set aside for the PTA lunch room at Silverton, if that organiza
tion Can persuade local citizens to see the necessity of such an

At the April association meeting, the membership voted to
ask all citizens to join the "Each
Family, a Garden Bow for the
PTA Lunch Room club.T A large
number of local folk are indicat
ing their Intention of saying one
row of vegetable garden space for
this purpose.; ':;- :pt. &
By this means, officers of . the
association state, sufficient vege
tables can be had to keep up the
lunch room opened in the local
schools two years ago. Many of
the vegetables are preserved for
winter use In the lunch room,
where a very smalljee Is charged
those who can pay for their lunch
but where none are turned away
because of lack of the set fee. Dur
ing March, 1935 paid lunches, and
1295 free lunches were served.
The local PTA is also planning
a benefit for the swimming fund.
The local group hopes to center its
summer activities In providing
swimming facilities for the town's

In revealing the destruction of three more Axis submarines, the

The simple idea of this column
is to tell the plain story, week by
week, of the main things of gen
eral interest in what the people of
the woods are doing in the war.
To Introduce the column, rd
like te Imagine myself welcome
for a moment or oo in yamr
home. It Is not so hard for aw
to fancy. This Is a land of
friendly people. Man and boy.
I've lived in it for nigh on a
years. In about all bat the first
two of these years Ie made my
livins from the forest. In one.
way or another first as a
logger and lumber worker In
Idaho, Washington, Oregon and
northern California, and later
as a writer "with the bark on."
In my boyhood the ring-tail-roarer
of the big timber was fair
ly common, the hairy bully who
liked to declare himself as: "I'm
a curly 'wolf from the tall and
uncut! Ill eat hay. if it's got
whisky on it! I howl in my sleep!"
Now you meet such self-conscious
hellions in calked boots only in
the movies. There are of -course
plenty of Joggers left who are
powerful in action and able in
speech. Not so long ago I heard
one such break forth, after losing
patience with a young greenhorn,
In this prayer, with both fists lift
ed high: "Oh, Lord, come down
in the form of a blue goose and
gobble him up!"
But we are mostly home peo
ple now; family folks; polite in
speech and chock-full of other
good manners.
SoI venture to hope youll let
me in for a spell, with this idea,
"Out of the Woods," and that you
will look it over.
In our . owa papers we read
dally accounts by big-time east
ern writers of the war Industries
of the east, aad they make
good reading. Oar work in the
forests of the Pacific northwest
has as many good stories in it
on Its war service. They are
stories jsf local human Interest
and .they are stories of national
- Importance.
When- the production chiefs of
America's- war effort -consider
their thousands of needs from the
forests. Pacific northwest timber
is 'first In their- minds. Canton
ments must come before soldiers,
shipyards before ships, boxes and
crates before transportation of
war supplies and so on through
'.'a' long list'.!
: Our' future Is a forest future.
Three quarters of" our land Is
prime; land for timber growing,
while this area holds little prom
ise for other crops. Our timber
species are the best on earth. Our
soil and climate are wonderful
- for trees. . ... "... , .. ,
What have oar yoang men
and women and ear children
got to look forward to In the

: sions, businesses? What about
the future of schools, churches,
homes, m forest-industry com-

Weve got to" have everlasting
forests here, to keep going and to
keep growing as a great region
of America. How may we have
" them? What about the forest fire?
What about timber cutting prac
tices? Who is growing trees?
Where? How? What's all this on
"Keep Washington and Oregon
Green"?
What we are seeking here Is to
establish a common ground of for
est fellowship, -i - Vvi-v:.;-.'
Last summer I happened, to
be with a timber operator, a
bull-backer, as industry forest
er, and an hourly wage earner
tn the woods. The Unto was the
lunch hour. An argument got
going about a controversial
- problem that was ! pretty hot
right then on that operation, f
Then came a lull. The causV of
it was a number of; camp-roDoers,
. zeeding on tne crumos ox we

from their fingers. It went on for
a quarter of an hour. The bad
feeling vanished. The forester
seized the opportunity to talk up
a plan to map out the operation
on a timber-cropping program.
This also proved to be of common
interest One touch of nature...
an idea close to the hearts of all
four men of the. woods ... and
fellowship of the forest became
a living spirit under the trees.
