Civilian Defense in the Valley
Boys Train as Forest Guards,
Police Reserves Study Guns
V MILL CITY In anticipation of the possibility of air raids
over forests, and the scarcity of man power, the forestry de
partment is training high school boys all over the state in the
duties of forest guards. f
Each Monday afternoon a three hour class is held at Mill
City high school for those boys
who previously registered. There
are over 20 boys, including four
from Gates, enrolled in the class,
which is being taught by various
forest service officials.
The course has thus far cov
ered map reading, use of fire
finders and pacing. In the four
lessons to follow, compass read
ing, how to put out small fires
and trail blazing, will be covered.
PEDEE Herman Amos ad
dressed the police reserves Mon
day on construction and relative
merits of various types of guns.
Amos, a mail carrier of Rickreall,
spends much of his time on his
ranch here, carrying on his hobby
of gun-smithing. He not only
constructs guns but makes .the
ammunition as well.

MILL CITY Dr. Kendall E.
Burke, president, and several
students of Northwest Christian
college of Eugene, will have
charge of the Sunday school and
morning worship services at the
Church of Christ Sunday.
Following a fellowship dinner
the group will present a program
consisting of vocal, violin, piano,
electric 'guitar, talks and humor
ous readings. Dr. Burke will be
guest speaker.
Others in the group are Beverly
Burgess, Gilbert Kistler, John
Baird, Dean Berger and Deanna
Severson. The community is in
vited. Members of the Dorcas society
of the Church of Christ met for
an all day quilting Wednesday.
Proceeds from the finished work
will be sent to a leper colony.

Woman's club. Hosts and hos
tesses were Dr. and Mrs. William
Merriam, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Charboneau, Mrs. Thelma Tallent
