Sgt Bentson, former. Statesman
carrier, was graduated from Sa
lem high school in 1938. He later
; attended Willamette university
and was a Boy Scout master when
he entered service.

who was killed in the crash of
training plane at Bakersfield,
Calif, Friday was one of uni
versity high school's outstanding

ord of 80 points. He later played
on the University of Oregon
freshman and varsity squads. t
His father, J. J. Gard, vice-

was to have been next week.

Defense Bond

Camport head of the county de
fense bond sale, was in Mt Angel
Wednesday, to sell an- F bond ' to
the school children of St Mary's
school. The $74 to buy the $100
bond was raised by the young
sters by giving a show and a -food
sale which netted, them over $80.
The children drew names to
choose a boy and girl to represent
the seven rooms of - the public
school and a boy and girl from
the two first grades which "com
prise the parochial school ' and
have the foursome take the place
in the ceremony of purchasing the
bond. . - I

discussion was a feature of the
PTA ptogram Tuesday. The main
topics discussed were on religious
education in the schools, curfew
laws, band work, and teachers au

Mrs. Ethel McCoy announced
that an immunization for diphthe
ria clinic under federal supervi-
sion will be held at the school
this month for children of school
and pre-school age.

the basketball tournament at
Newberg and displayed the trophy
won by the team.
An announcement was made by
Leighton Dashiell to the effect
that nearly 100 per cent of the

parents was awarded the sixth
grade.
