Air Force in Night Operation

MOSCOW, Feb. 26-(Wide World)-Watching the red air
force operate by night over the great snowy battlefields west of
Moscow is like looking at the northern lights to the accompani
ment of a thousand tom-toms.
The air force and the land crews put on the fireworks. The
beat of many motors supply the
tom-tom. effect
The sunset was blazing when
I heard the first rear. Standing
on a windswept Mil with snows
piled four feet deep I looked up
to see a flock of fighters and
bombers, the red stars on their
nnderwings made more brilliant
by the red sun.
There was no doubt where they
were heading in the same direc
tion of the red army's dash west
ward. Then came the night. The
bright young moon amid a mil
lion brightly twinkling stars was
the ceiling for the show.
All of us knew where those
planes were carrying their cargoes
of death. They would drop them
about the frightened faces of re
treating nazis, already beset by
the bitter winter and the vigorous
rid army.
I waited for, hours awaiting the
return of those planes.
Then came the first sign of
their returning a faint murmur
across the hills. Then I saw
themtiny lights among the
bright stars. Suddenly there
arose from the snew somewhere
off to the right a rocket. The
planes winked back and kept
on.
More and more planes roared
back. No artist using a lush brush
ever painted a more jeweled
heaven.

the ever watchful searchlights
fingered the night skies with their
piercing crystal beams, f
The roarmg grew louder. By
this time there were rockets to
the right, rockets to the left and
rockets arching from the planes
The show continued for a long
time.
From such an operation, I drew
the conclusion that the red air
force must be pretty confident of
its might.
When an air force fears the
enemy might be on its tall, when
antl-alreraft batteries in ner
vosa lest they might be suable
to cope with tho Invaders It
doesnt put en such a show.
This spectacle wrote confidence
all over the skies.
Incidetnally, it was the first
time a foreign newspaperman ever
had been allowed to see the red
air force in a night operation.

Doctor Ponders Separation of
Healthy Siamese-Twin Girls
NEW YORK, Feb. 26-(-Face to face and joined together,
two baby girls rested Thursday night in a single crib at St. Vin
cent's hospital, Staten Island, while in another room their mother
kept asking:
"Where are my babies? Are my babies all right? They won't
let me see them."
Finally, hospital attendants
advised Carmine riccietto, the
29-year-eld father, te tell his
wife that she had given birth
to Siamese twins. When he in
formed her, arses said, she
expressed astonishment but
juickly became recendled.
The little girls, who weighed
together, nine pounds, four oun
ces, were being fed another mo
ther's milk through a medicine
dropper and given oxygen as a
precautionary measure.
Dr. Peter Timpone, who deliv
ered the twins Thursday, indi
cated that he planned to move
very carefully in preparing for
any possible attempt at an oper
ation that might successfully sep
arate them.
He said extensive x-ray ex
aminations would be made this
week te determine whether
they have the same blood
stream. The basics are Joined
from a point just below the
chest to about an Inch below
the navel a distance of about
three Inches.
Disclosing that many physi
cians had called him to offer their
assistance if needed, he sighed
and added:
"I have an idea how Dr. Dafoe
felt, after he'd delivered the Di
nne quintuplets."
Dr. Timpone delivered the only
other child born to the Picciotto
couple, a baby which died short
ly after its birth about 18 months
ago. He said delivery of the twins
was not difficult. They were
baptized by the hospital chaplain
and christened Joan and Vincen
ts. "They are perfectly healthy
children," Dr. Timpone said.
They're beinr. treated as nor
mal babies."
Examinations and tests would
require at least a month before
any surgery was contemplated,
Dr. Timpone declared. He said
the father, a New Brighton but
cher, so far declined to discuss
the children or to talk about the
matter in any way.
Scio News
SCIO - Routine and other mat
ters are to be taken up at the
March meeting of the city coun
cil Monday night.
Mrs. C. L. Pennell and Mrs. J,
D. Densmore, Jr., are to entertain
the Scio Garden club at the lat
ter's home March 3.
A carload or more of feed
wheat is under consideration by
several farmers in the Scio area,
according to Frank Nadvornik.
Harvey Shelton, who died re
cently at his Lyons home near
Scio at the age of 83, was one of
the early settlers of the Scio area,
being a descendant of the Missou
ri Sheltons who acquired several
hundred acres of land in this Vi
cinity under federal land laws.
One son and four sisters survive
in Oregon.
Several Scioans last Sunday at
tended a farewell reception for
Donald Shelton, formerly of Scio,
who is leaving for army service.
Dinner was given at his home at
Alpine, Benton county.
Burns Firm Buys
Big Timber Area
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 26.-()
-Hines Lumber company. Burns,
Ore., was successful bidder for
555,000,000 (M) board feet of pine
timber in tha Malheur national
forest of Oregon, US forest serv
ice regional headquarters here
announced today.
The company bid $2.65 per
thousand feet for pine and 65
cents per thousand for Douglas
fir and larch, plus 25 cents per
thousand for brush removal and
10 cents per thousand for stands
betterment.
Forest service officials said the
timber sold was approximately
the sustained yield capacity for
that area.
Missionary Speaks
MILL CITY M. B. Madden,
former missionary to Japan, who
is an oriental scholar, was a
guest in Mill City recently and
held services at the Church of
Christ while here.
Three Babies Arrive
SILVERTON Three babies,
two boys and one girl, were born
at the Silverton- hospital Tuesday.
These include sons to Mrs. J. D,
Long and Mrs. Ray McKillop and
a daughter to Mrs. Julius Gehring.
