- -1 Tho OEECSON STATESMAN, Scdain. Orwgon. Friday Horning, January ZX 1S42 PAGEELEVIZT International Common Currency For Post-War Transactions Is Vision of US Treasury Chief WASltlNGTON, ! Jan. 22-flJ)-Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, jr., Thursday envisioned a post-war world freed of all problems of monetary exchange through use of a standard type of currency in international transactions. , He revealed to a press conference that his -representatives at the American republics meet ing in Rio De Janeiro arc trying to start the idea with the Ame ricas. He added that he hoped that eventually the whole 'world would adopt such a plan. Nearly every country In the world has its own kind of mon ey and ene ef the major prob lems ef peace time i trade has been' flnctaaUons ia ! the value f different enrrenele In terms ef the ethers. The dlfflevlty has been particularly acute, of ficials said, in latin America and has hindered trade with those countries. ; Explaining his idea, Morgen thau said that if some unit of currency "common to all of the republics and to Canada" could be established "it would help the flow of trade and would make us all that much closer to each other.". The currency idea is part 'ot-a broad program of economic co operation being fostered by the United States delegation at Rio. Other features include lowering of tariff and other trade barriers, and assistance for the develop ment in mining, industry and transportation in Latin America. These, with other proposals, form a hemispheric war produc tion plan. Secretary ef State Hull told his press conference that most. If not all, of the points in the program were receiving con sideration but that he could not disclose developments at the present time. ' Asked about lowerlnr of the trade barriers, the secretary pointed eat that such a plan was being worked eat with Ca nada and, in the case of Latin America, it was natural for appropriate authorities to ex plore broader areas In the same connection. " Asked if this plan would apply to beef and wheat, the secretary said all products were being, con sidered carefully. Morgenthau said the trade mo ney might be a brand new cur rency which wouldn't belong to any one country but would be Issued by an international com mission. . ' Vi - He said, on the other hand, it was possible the United States dollar might serve as the com mon currency for foreign trade purposes. He doubted whether the currency idea would have any effect on the use of native money within a country.
