December 24, 1941 Farm Financia Mar Stock Market Is Indefinite Slight Upward Trend Olfset by Declines In Many Issues NEW YORK, Dec. 22-(JP)-Tht stock market displayed recovery elements Tuesday but not in suf ficient amount to touch off any real twitch of the downward trend. While a number of favorites were lifted fractions to a point or so, declines of as much were plentiful and the direction at the close still was a bit indefinite. The Associated Press average of . 60 stocks was unchanged at 35.5 After a drop of .5 in the preced Ing session to a new bottom since April 1, 1938. Tax selling persisted on a large scale although, with only six more sessions available for this sort of liquidation, the opinion was heard that it should dry up from now to the end of the year. At that, there was enough of it Tuesday to put the turnover at 1,417,422 shares compared with 1,459,065 Monday. Many new lows for the year or longer were registered. Among these was American Telephone which lost 1 at 121 when its subsidiary, N. Y. Telephone, de clared a dividend of $1.50, put ting this year's payments at $7.50 against $8 in 1940. American can wiped out a size able early set-back and finished unchanged at 59 when directors voted the regular dividend of $1 on the stock. U. S. Rubber retrieved 3 points of its recent loss. Others retain ing advances included U. S. Steel, Bethlehem, Chrysler, Santa Fe, Great Northern, Kennecott, Good rich, Douglas Aircraft, Glenn Martin, Westlnghouse, Dow Chemical and General Electric. Cattle Surplus Envisioned hy Ag Official More beef, not more beef cat tle on the range. Is the aim of the 1942 production goal calling or an Increase in slaughter of about 3,000,000 head of cattle and calves over 1941, according to W. M. Tate, chairman of the Marion county USDA agricultural de fense board. There is danger ahead for beef cattle, producers if herds continue to increase, the county chairman said, citing statement on the situation he has just received from Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard The number of cattle and calves has been increasing rapidly for the past several years and is now not far below the record peak of 74,000,000 head Just prior to the disastrous drouth of 1934. At the present rate of increase, the num ber will exceed 74,000,000 in an other year. To make their position secure, the secretary has called on beef cattle producers to do four things now, Tate said. They are: 1. Market more cows and heif ers to prevent further Increases in rftle numbers. The foal for cattle slaughter for next year cannot be reached unless a larger proportion of breeding animals are marketed. 2. Pay off indebtedness now while prices and demand are good so as to avoid the danger of hav ing to pay big debts at low prices later. 8. Keep livestock numbers in balance with normal feed sup plies. Range conditions and feed supplies in the west have been unusually good this year. Drougkt can cause a lot of Iocs if there is no feed reserve available, 4r if ranges are over-grazed. 1 4. Improve breeding herds Ijy culling out and aelling undesir able animals while demand 1 good.
