NEW YORK, Dec. 16.-(ff)-The
itock market pulled its recovery
punches late Tuesday after scor
ing anf assortment of selective ad
vances in the forenoon.
The list again derived little in
spiration from the war news but
early gains of fractions to a point
or so were nqtable among steels,
coppers, aircrafts, oils and spe
cialties which stand to benefit
from broadening of the arms program.;
Thei Associated Press average
of 60 stocks was off .1 of a point at
37. Tax selling in a number of
low-priced issues expanded to the
million-mark.
Among stocks hitting new 1941
bottoms were General Motors,
Chrysler, Montgomery Ward,
Sears Roebuck, Allied Chemical
and International Telephone. The
last-named came out on one
transler of 26,400 shares, off Vs at
a New Year's low.

Labor Saving
Plans Told
The more nearly dairy farmers
can arrange for a year-round
pasture system the less they will
be bothered by labor shortage
next year, points out E. R. Jack
man, extension farm crops spec
ialist, in listing a number of
ways Oregon farmers can pre
pare in advance to cheat next
year's labor shortage bogie.
When dairy cows are on pas
ture labor is reduced by more
than one-half as compared with
feeding harvesting crops, Jack
man points out. Hogs can also get
part of their feed from pasture,
with alfalfa and rape being the
best bets for them. Pigs on such
pastures need only half as much
protein supplements for balanced
rations.
For dairy farms a high percent
age of land in hay and pasture
has been found most profitable.
Coast farms particularly have
adopted this plan, preferring to
buy grain produced m regions
where growers specialize in grain
crops.

Magnesium ammonium phos
phate crystals are a nontoxis con
stituent of shrimp and other sea
foods canned under certain con
ditions, the wire, sent in response
to a query from Metzger, con
tinues.
Metzger points out that experi
ments of some years standing
have shown that these crystals,
often mistaken for ground glass,
have been demonstrated to occur
in the flesh of Japanese and Pa
cific coast crabs and also in can
ned shrimp

Guard Group Planned
WOODBURN Tentative plans
are under way in Woodburn to
organize a home guard of veter
ans of the last war and other
men of the same age, and also
a corps of youths of high school
age. Both groups would be used
for police and guard duty.
