PAGE SIX Betrothal of Couple- Is Told Miss Marion MacLachlan is now wearing a diamond on the third finger of her left hand. Today Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Mac Lachlan are announcing the be trothal of their daughter, Mar lon, to Lieutenant Robert L. DeVlieg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary DeVlieg of Rockford, Ill inois. The wedding will be. an event r of early January, depending on army orders. The couple first met when army air maneuvers were held in Salem in Novem ber. The bride-elect attended the University of California and is now connected with the Per sonal Finance company of Sa lem. Her fiance attended the University of Minnesota and is now stationed at the Portland air base. Mr. and Mrs. DeVlieg are planning to arrive from the east the latter part of the month and will be here for their son's marriage. The group made plans for their Christmas charity work and will dress dolls. The Christmas party will be held on December 18 at the home of Dr. Marion Mayo. SILVERTON S a idle 1 Orr Dunbar was guest speaker at the Silvcrton Woman's club Mon day and spoke on the adjust ment of economic relations, par ticularly in reference to South America. Special guests with Mrs. Dun bar were Mrs. David Wright of Salem, and members of the Sil verton Junior Woman's club, the Willard, Silver Cliff Union Hills Women's clubs and the local pas tor's wives. . Mrs. F. M. Powell lead in the salute to the flag. Musical num bers were given by the high school chorus directed by Law rence Edwards and accompanied by Florence Lee. Mrs. Williams Is Guest at Dinner Mrs. Thomas Holman has re ceived word from her daugh ter, Mrs. Winston Williams, that she was a special guest at the Thanksgiving dinner at Camp 2928 on Annette Island, Alaska.. Lt. Williams is stationed with the Civilian Conservation corps on the island. The island is 40 miles from Ketchikan where Lt. and Mrs. Williams have their apartment. Mrs. Williams went by boat to the island for din ner and came back by sea plane. Pictured in the national CCC paper, published in Washington, DC, was a photograph of an eagle taken by Lt. Williams. Eagles are protected in the United States but in the terri tory of Alaska a bounty of one dollar is offered for each pair of feet. The Horizon club met Satur day at the Dr. Pepper club room. Christmas decorations were used. In charge were Co rinne Wade, Jeanne De Mytt and Florence Lewis. Mix remaining ingredients and roll in small balls. Let stand overnight and in the morning bake, then roll in confectioners' sugar. MOTHER'S GINGER COOKIES 1 cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 cup molasses 4 cups flour Vz teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons soda in cup warm water 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons ginger Yt teaspoon lemon extract Cream shortening and sugar, add egg and mix. Add sifted in gredients and the liquids. Let stand overnight and then make into small balls, press with a fork and bake. Will crispen up.
