Father Steps Out 8:50. prunes in Oregon in 1941 is tentatively set at 6000 tons, compared with 2600 tons in 1940 and 21,780 tons as the 1930-39 average. The California dried prune pro duction was i83,ouo tons 10 per cent above 1940 but 7 per cent under the average. Oregon's commercial apple crop on October 1 looked like 2,794, 000 bushels, against 3,263,000 bushels in 1940. The prospects are for a crop 73 per cent of the 1934-39 aver age. National production is esti mated at 124,754,000 bushels, or very nearly tne 1834-39 average but over 10 million bushels un der 1940. The 1942 strawberry acreage indications are placed at 13,600 acres compared with 14,200 acres harvested in 1941. Clackamas and Washington counties indicate decreased acre ages; Marion and Multnomah in creased output For the US, pros pective acreage next year is 210,' 930 acres or 3 per cent less than in 1940 . Preliminary figures place Oregon's 1940 hop crop at 17, 238,000 pounds against 19,992, 000 pounds a year ago and the average of 18,236,000 pounds. Oregon yield per acre was only 840 pounds uus year, it is now believed, compared with 1020 pounds in 1940 and the 10-year average of 937 pounds. Oregon's production was nearly 4,000,000 pounds above that of Washington and over 7,000,000 pounds more than in California. Both Washington, and California produced more hops than Oregon per acre 1860 and 1300 pounds respectively. Filberts are estimated at 3870 tons compared with 2700 tons last year and 1321 tons for the 10 year average. Washington filbert production is estimated at 720 tons or 210 tons more than in 1940. The Oregon walnut crop is also above last year, with the preliminary figure 5500 tons against 4200 tons in 1940 and 2655 tons for the 10-year average. Milk production per cow in this state on October 1 was placed at 15.7 pounds or up three-tenths of a pound over the same date a year ago and 1.3 pounds for the 1930-39 average. Pasture condi tions on the same date were 91 per cent; a year ago the percen tage was 73. Eggs produced per 100 layers in Oregon were placed at 33.6 on October 1, a gain over the 32.7 figure of 1940.
