Much of the unexplained sheep
loss In western Oregon is believed
due to a new disease just dis
covered by Dr. O. H. Muth, as
sociate professor f veterinary
medicine at pregon State college.
This disease is known as listerella
or listerellosis.
The trouble has also been known
as circling disease because infect
ed sheep wander around in circles
butting into fences and other ob
jects. These peculiar symptoms
are caused by bacteria which en
ter the brain stem and cause an
inflammation of the brain and
spinal cord.
While this disease had prev
iously been reported from Eng
land, New Zealand, and some of
the eastern parts of t h e United
States, this is the first record of
its appearance in the western
states, says Dr. Muth.
These same listerellosis bacter
ia are also known to affect cattle
and poultry, Dr. Muth added. A
slightly different type of the or
ganism has been reported to at
tack humans in Australia, Swe
dien, Iowa and other places
throughout the world.
It is suggested that any symp
terns such as these be' reported
promptly to the county agent or
county veterinarian.
