Prices up
Pacific coast hop markets maln
talned a firm to strong tone dur
ing the week ended, October 15,
according to the department of
agriculture. Price advances were
well maintained, and a new high
i- for choice seedless hops was made
in. California when 325 bales of
f 1941 crop brought 50 cents per
' pound.
i ( The general crop report issued
by the US department of agri
culture as of October 1 states that
the indicated production of hops
in the three Pacific coast states
is 40,552,000 pounds compared
with 42,552,000 pounds in 1940
and the 10-year average of 34,
714,000 pounds.
. ; Yields did not measure up to
earlier indications, and the pres
ent estimate Is 2,000,000 pounds
less than the September 15 esti
mate. In Oregon the crop is now
placed at 17,238,000 pounds or
14 per cent less than produced
last year.
Oregon hop markets main
tained a firm to strong tone
during the week ended Octo
ber 15. Offerings were moder
ate, and demand was good.
Baling was 95 per cent com
pleted, and the quality was re
ported as excellent.
Probably due to higher prices
paid for picking this season, the
hops were cleaner picked, there
being less leaves and stems than;
In any crop in recent years. Then,
too, growing conditions this sea
son were not favorable for the
development of seeds, and from j
this angle the hops are of much
better quality than average.
Sales of 1941 seeded hops were
reported at 35 to 36 cents, and
one or two good sized lots were
sold at 37 cents. Offers of 45
cents were made for seedless hops,
but no sales were reported at this
price. Contracts for 1942 seeded
clusters were offered at 31 cents,
and for seedless - the offers were
36 cents. $ j
Washington markets were firm,
demand was good, but trading
was limited on account of the few
lots of hops available. It was re
ported from Yakima that not
more than 3000 to 3500 bales re
mained unsold.
Contracts for 1942 crops offered
30 cents for seeded and 35 cents
for seedless! Sales of 1941 crop
included 125 bales of semi-seed
less at 41 cents. The western part
of the state reports that most of
the 1941 crop is sold with 34 cents
being paid for fuggles during the
week. Seventy five bales of 1942
fuggles were contracted at 30
cents.
California hop markets main
tamed a firm to strong tone dur
ing the week ending October 15
with .moderate offerings from
growers meeting continued good
demand from the trade.
Prices held firm around the
hlzh points for the season with
the market on 1941 regular
seeded types placed at 35 cents
and top quality seedless at SO
cents per pound net growers.
Trading and movement were
lily moderately active reflect
mff the small stocks In first
hands and the strong holding
tendency among growers.
Current offerings were mostly
In less than carlot lots and rep
resented overages from previous
contracts. On the other hand, do
mestic dealers and industries
continued to accumulate supplies
for, their needs during the 1941
42 season, and shippers reported
continued good export inquiry.
Sales of 941 hops by growers
during the week were made up
of small scattered lots " totaling
200 to 300 bales of regular seeded
types which netted coastal coun
ty growers 35 cents and around
50 bales of semi-seedless hops at
42 - cents net Sonoma county
grower. Sacramento valley grow
ers on October 15 sold 325 bales
of 1941 seedless hops at 50 cents
per pound which leaves only
about 100 bales unsold in that
area, v
"Growers reported further In
terest in 1942 hops with around
500 bales of regular seeded types
contracted in Sonoma county at
around 30 cents per pound- net
grower. In the Sacramento Val
ley the market on 1942 seedless
hops to contain not more than
2 per cent seeds and 3 per cent
stems and leaves was - nlaccd
around 36 to 37 cents net grow
er, but no additional contracts
were reported.
The New York "hop market
maintained quiet but firm tone
with prices steady and unchanged.
Soma buying reported but mostly
on hand to mouth basis. Foreign
hops dull and nominal. No new
shipments reported. October 15
regular 1941 stocks quoted to
trade) at New York at 43-45 cents;
seedless 56 to 58 cents; 1940 reg
ulars 33-40 cents per pound; 1933
stocks nominal. ' ,' ...

ers' wholesale market Friday and

market continued, with prices
ranging' from 4 to 7 cents pound
for similar quality. Younts sold

Many of the stock- list leaders
ended fractions to around a point
higher but minus signs also were
fairly pltifuL The Associated
Press stock composite had a net
gain of X of a point at 40.6 after
three consecutive declines.
Transactions totaled fi7nnm
shares compared with 841,360,

Market students saw in the re
versal of trend an indication that
the almost unbroken decline since
early October - had strengthened
its internal position and at the
same time discounted in some de
gree the adverse elements in the
Russian situation and the Japan
ese cabinet organization.
Closing higher were US Steel,
Bethlehem, General Motors, Chry
sler, US Rubber, Boeing, Douglas,
Consolidated Aircraft, American
Telephone, American Can, - Dow
