Codling Moth'
Again Active
Apple and pear growers in the
Willamette valley should apply a
spray now for the control of cod
ling moth, according to Acting
County Agent Robert E. Riede.
Following a long period of inac
tivity, codling moths are again
active, and during the past two
evenings eggs have been depos
ited, r
Under ordinary valley weather
conditions, these eggs will hatch
by,- J uly 2. The spray should be
applied before that date.
The"recommended spray is pow
dered lead . arsenate used at the
rate of three pounds to 100 gal
lons of water. In orchards where
codling moth is not a serious
problem, two pounds of powdered
lead- arsenate to 100 gallons of
water is sufficient to give control,
Rieder explained.
Calcium arsenate, used it the
rates of three pounds powdered
calcium arsenate td 100 gallons of
water, has been used success
fully in the Willamette valley for
codling mom control. Tests car
ried on by the entomology depart

Thoroughness ' of application is
essential in moth control. The.
foliage as well as the entire sur
face of . every apple and ' pear
should be thoroughly covered with
the spray solution, if worm injur
is to be prevented..
' Special ..care should be' taken
in spraying the upper portion of
the tree, as more than half of the
moth eggs are laid in the upper
third of the tree, Rieder said.
Radish Shortage
Still Evident
PORTLAND, June 27 The
radish shortage continued on the
Portland markets Thursday with
the short supply strongly priced
at 35 cents a dozen bunches, a
new high for the season.
Beans were a shade easier at 8
cents on both local green and
wax kinds, lettuce was slow with .
best high sizes bringing 85 cents
a crate and much of the supply
going for 60 cents. Cabbage sold
for $1.15 on bulk of sales, and
red cabbage at $1.00 a flat. - "
A small supply of Danish
squash was offered at $1J5, with
summer squash at 75 cents full
crate for the best grade.
