(Photo by Eby) Couple Notes Anniversary WEST SALEM Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Carter, 551 Rosemont avenue, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday with three children, two grandchild ren and a daughter-in-law pres ent They all motored to Drain for the day 'to visit old friends. Mr.' Carter was born at Otto kee, Fulton county, Ohio, and Mrs. Carter, the former Elizabeth M. Yager, was born In Erie coun ty, New York. They were married "June 23, 1891, in a' small town near Buf falo, New York. They visited Ni agara Falls and many places In Canada on their honeymoon. The Carter family lived on a farm at Wauscon, Ohio, for 10 years and at North Collins, NY, for six years. Then Mr. Carter was em ployed at a locomotive works at Dunkirk, NY, for four years. He was forced to quit because of ill health. In March, 1911, they cam to Drain, where they lived for 15 years before coming to this city. They have three children, Ma bel, Harold and' Herma. The old er daughter, Mrs. Mable'Lind gren, and her two sons, Dean and Don, live at Camas, Wash. Hogg of the Salem chamber of commerce membership committee has asked his committeemen to meet with the board of directors at a lunch eon meeting at the chamber next Monday noon to discuss plans for the summer. . Eagles Open Conclave BEND, June 25-fl5)-Fifteen hundred delegates are expected to attend ' the Oregon Fraternal Order of Eagles convention, open ing here Thursday. Fire Destroys Box Factory At Anacorfes ANACORTES, June 25-irV Fire which started 15 minutes after the. day work crew went off shift destroyed the box factory and the planing mill of the Ana cortes Lumber company late Wednesday. Frank McCormack, company official, estimated the total loss, involving lumber, at $75,000. Flames leaped high into ' the air from '. the piles of kiln-dried lumber which was awaiting pro cessing in the planer. Company officials expressed the belief the fire started in a planer "hot box." ' ' The mill had been in produc tion only since about the first of the year after reconstruction of the main sawmill, which was destroyed by fire in 1938. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Loy from eastern Oregon spent the weekend with his father, J. R. Loy. ' Allen Mullett, Mountain Iron, Minn, came to spend the summer with his friend, Donald Lundberg. . Mrs. Delia Carpenter, Butler, Mo, came Sunday to visit her son, Clyde Carpenter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Gillam and not burn In the 1938 fire. "Uncle Jake" and -Aunt Becky Taylor took a trip in a motorboat down to Salem where they spent several days visiting friends. On account of frequent showers and shortage of help, farmers are having a tedious time making hay. Strawberry growers through this section are well pleased with their crop this year and still of fering some for sale. Camp Pioneer Call Is Made To Scouters if . , , . - j Boy Scouts from the Cascade area council, Marion, Linn and Polk counties, who pran to visit Camp Pioneer should send in their names soon, according to R. R. Ruddiman, director of the camp, who believes that approxi mately 200 boys will attend dur ing the four weeks season, which opens July 6. . '' . Recovers From Injury UNIONVALE Robert Arnold, Seattle; is a vacation guest of his uncle j, and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kleinschmidt. Mrs. Klein schmidt is recovering from injur ies to his left shoulder suffered when working in his woodshed more than a month ago. Director Elected DAYTON Mrs. Guy Remme, Dayton, was elected director for a five year term at the election Monday of the Dayton Union high school district There "were 25 voters in attendance, 13 of whom voted to increase the budget and nine voted against the measure.
