Oregon Hop
Mart Firm
' Demand Active for
Remaining 1940
Crop Supply ;
. Oregon hop markets were firm
during the past week, according
to the weekly report of the de
fpartment of agriculturre. - An ac
live demand was expressed from
dealers for The small remaining
Supplies of 1940 hops in growers'
hands, but no sales were reported
Cue to an almost entire lack of
Offerings.
Offers by dealers for this
growth were reported as ranging
irom 26c to 28 lie per pound to
growers, according to quality and
size of lots.
There were no new con
tracts covering 1941 hops re
ported written in Oregon dur
ing the period, since. both deal
ers and growers were reluct
ant to enter into commitments
at this time because of the un
certainty as to outturns. -In
the absence of actual trans
' actions, nominal values were
placed at around 27c per .pound
for reguar seeded types and about
40c per pound for seedless hops
from the 1941 crop. Now crop
prospects in Oregon are reported
. as most irregular. Trade reports
Indicate that -definite damage has
resulted already from the severe
infestation of downy mildew in
this state. However, it is not yet
possible to estimate accurately the
pamage. Some yards are heavily
infested, while the infestation is
lighter in others. Infestation is
spotted within the same yards. It
is generally believed that the ex
tent of damage can not be esti
mated until hot, dry weather is
received. Growers are still en
deavoring to combat the mildew
with approved spraying and dust
ing methods.
Washington markets also were
firm. In the Yakima valley, sale
of around 123 bales of prime
quality 1940 hops was reported
at 25c per pound net growers.
Bidding was reported ; active for
the few remaining spot hops in
growers' hands. Only one carlot
sized lot is left and only 300 bales
in all remaining in that area,
from the 1940 crop. All , older
crops with the exception of one
or two small lots of 1937 hops
i have been sold. No further acuV
ity Jn new crop contracts report
eL
Warm, dry weather last week
checked the spread of mildew but
further rains this week may in
crease ?the spread progress in
fpite of unfavorable weather. No
sales, or offers reported in the
Puyallup valley area. The new
crop is showing good growth there
although . considerable rain has
been received. Downy mildew is
reported rather serious in the
cluster yards and some is show
ing in the fuggles.
California hop markets re
mained quite firm during the
past week with light offerings
from growers and fairly active
demand from dealers and -industries.
Continued uncertainty

Wool in Boston
BOSTON. June 20 (AP) (USDA)
Actual trading was slow in Boston on
greasy shorn wools. A few houses were
getting inquiries for territory wools,
but few sales were closed. Bright
fleece wools received very few in
quiries, with quotations on combing
three-eighths and one-quarter blood
grades ranging mostly 46-48 cents, in
the grease. The finer grades ot for
eign wools were receiving very little
demand, but quotations were steady,
Woolen wools suitable for making
goods on sending government con
tracts were receiving numerous in
quiries.

supplies of . wool and - prices on

government orders. Prices made
on sales this week are generally
