AGS TCI 111 CIGOir STATESMAN, Calem. Oregon. Thursday Morning. June 12. 1S41 7heat Prices Take Drop Federal Forecast of , Big Harvest Cause ' Y of Recession - CHICAGO, June lHtf)-The rovernment's crop report, fore' casting a Jtig domestic wheat har vest this year, chilled speculative buying sentiment in the grain market and wheat prices dipped a cent a bushel at times. ' .The report more than over shadowed recent t wheat deterior ation In parts of the southwest due to excessive rain, soaking grain at harvest time, causing, it to lodge, delaying field work and promoting rust spread. Buying, some of which was attributed to mills, appeared in sufficient vol ume after midsession to lift prices around the previous dose at one stage. Wheat closed ',4-1 cent lower than Thursday, July $1.01-y4, September $1.03-1.03. j The winter wheat crop fore cast by the government at 697, 692,000 bushels has been exceed ed only twice previously, in 1931 and 1919. While traders said this forecast apparently did not re flect abnormal harvest-time -con-' ditioris that have developed since June 1 as a result of rains, it in dicates there is to be an abund ance of wheat available if present forecasts are borne out, . . Spring wheat conditions in the domestic northwest and Canada have been greatly improved by recent rains and; with carryover supplies in both the US and Can ada" of record proportions, grain men expressed belief any reduc tlon from theJune 1 -winter wheat estimate would be of compara lively little significance. They pointed out that rarely is the fi nal harvest much below that suggested on June 1. "Strictly Private9! By Quinn Hall 0' GAMPUML VSAP-MCIA V .- ...... m?
