Mayor Austin and member? of the coun cil received a telegram from Washington, DC, which carried the news that the WPA admimstra tion lias approved an ; allotment of $22,620 lor city wide project at Woodburn to improve streets. Operation of this project ' within discretion of the state works prog ress administration. The project originally asked for by the city called for about $35, 000, but part of it to be used for cleaning out drainage ditches was disapproved. " '; The part that has been approved includes improvement of Hard castle avenue and Catch street, construction of a new tennis court at Library Square, and the put ting in curbs and sidewalks in needed parts of Woodburn. It will be between four to eight weeks before the project is expected to get under way. The council disallowed a remon strance that had been filed against the proposed improvement , of new curb on Gatch street This was done after names signed to the remonstrance had been compared with a complete ' list of Gatch street property owners. Under . WPA regulations, - the government pays only for the la bor; cost of the material has to be met locally. Local funds needed for the new tennis court have Enroute to US : Bombed iy. ' ' Men taking the 20-hour course are John j. Dawes, Estel Swan, Thomas R. Smith, Alva Anderson, Darrell Anderson, J. O. Herron, John B. Herron, Orville "Brosig, Tex Blazek and Stanley Chance. The Red Cross training for Mill City firemen marks another step forward in the improvement of the Mill City fire department in this 'largest, unincorporated town in the United States," as It has often been designated. Three years ago there was no fire protection for the city's 1100 residents. Under the" rural fire protection act, empowering communities to name five directors and collect four-mill tax for fire protection in unincorporated districts, the Mill City fire department was or ganized a year ago. Because Mill City is, on both aides of the North Santiam river, and thus is in both Marion ' and Linn counties, two separate districts had to be formed. A WPA appropriation was made to build a $4000 fire halL and the districts now have a 1 ton fire truck with1 a 450-gallon front end pumper, a portable booster pump and a 300-gallon booster tank. They sold $2100 in bonds, which are being paid off wlthla xat years.. ' ; i-. ; Curtis Cline Is president of fhs North Mill City rural iire protes tion district and J.
