Isms Drive
Educational promotion ot Amer
icanism is the objective of cam
paign in which Fred C Marsden,
representative of the Military Or
der of the Purple Heart, Is en
gaged in Oregon and currently in
Salem which will be his head
quarters for the next several
months.
Combatting the Inroads of naz-
ism, communism and other for
eign ideologies is the purpose of
the campaign, but the method Is
purely educational, . Marsden ex
plained. The Purple Heart organ
ization recognizes, he said, that
Identification of persons engaged
in nazi or communist activity, and
any steps to control them, are Jobs
to be undertaken only by federal
authorities. His own task is to en
courage the promotion of patriot
ism in the schools, to address civic
clubs and other groups interested
In hearing his message, and to co
operate with patriotic organiza
tions In their endeavors along this
line. -
The Military Order of the Purple
Heart Is composed exclusively of
war veterans who were 'wounded
in action under conditions which
entitle them to wear a wound
. chevron or who were awarded
the meritorious citation certificate
of the AEF comander-ln-c ief.
The order was formed by men
who had been awarded the purple
heart medal in accordance with a
war department order Issued in
1932 but the purple heart medal
itself was instituted by an order
issued by George Washington in
1782. t
