two main features at the fourth
annual spring lamb show, which
opens Saturdaj at Monmouth and
is the first of a series to be held
in the , Willamette valley. ,
In connection Vith the lamb
exhibit, the breeders and Mon
mouth chamber of commerce have
agreed that the class for commer
cial lambs should be given a larg
er share of premium money than
the classes for purebreds In order
to stimulate more sheep produc
ers .to exhibit in this class.
The number of entries will de
termine to a' degree how" much
premium money will be paid in
this particular class. With this ex
ception, it is planned, to offer
about five awards in each class.
Most of the premiums this year
will be cash awards in addition
tc : some merchandise given by
Monmouth business 1 houses.
Stud Bams Exhibit
A' special exhibit of stud rams
has been arranged that should be
of considerable interest to sheep
breeders not only in this county
but elsewhere. Two imported
rams are to be on display, one
the Romney-Marsh ram recently
imported from New Zealand by
William Riddell and the other a
Southdown brought from Eng
land, exhibited by Eldon Riddell.
It is planned to have some ex
ceptional individuals of various
breeds."
Breeders as follows have sig
nified their willingness to put
them on display according to the
respective breeds as follows: Lin
coin, James Riddell; Cotswold, J,
B. j Lorence; Hampshire, Ronald
Hogg; Dorset-Horn, Kenneth Mc
Crae; Corriedale, Jimmie Riddell
Romney-Marsh, William Riddell
Southdowns, Eldon RiddelL
No competition . is offered in
connection with the stud ram ex
hfbit. It is merely intended to
stimulate interest among breed
ers.
In connection with the exhibit
of: rams, a discussion of various
problems affecting the sheep in
dustry has been planned for II
a. m. Harry Lindgren, extension
animal husbandman, Oregon
State college, has been scheduled
to speak.
The juniors are having judg
ing contest in the morning and
special lamb classes. Similar but
separate from adult breeders, in
the afternoon, with the exception
that all Junior entries will be sin
gle individuals only. -Dor
Trials Set.
The sheep dog trials, held last
year for the first time in connec
tion with the Polk county show,
are on the program. A special
group of ewes not entered in the
show competition, have been se
cured for the trials. They are not
only of fine wool breeding but
also have been worked with dogs.
Some outstanding, dogs are ex
pected. - .; . .
The other part of the program
that appeals to the general public
Is the free lamb rheat, which it
has become - customary to give
away at the lamb show. Four car
casses have been donated by the
following. breeders:-Ronald Hogg,
James Lewis, Homer - Link and
James RiddelL These, carcasses
are all to be butchered and made
into lamb cuts and given away as
special prizes.
Entries' are all. to be in place
by 9 a. mV Saturday. It is not
necessary, for . breeders to make'
entries in advance. It is suggest
ed that breeders not do any fit
ting preparatory to the show as
this is not customary at the spring
market lamb shows. It is intend
ed "by "the committees in charge
that no one should do any fitting.
Lambs should be exhibited in
connection with their quality as
market lambs only and this
should be the only consideration
in connection with awarding the
prizes. Claude Steusloff. of the
Valley Packing company, has
been scheduled as" judge. He was
the judge at the first show held
in this county three years ago.
