Bearish "War News
Brings Prices
a Cent Lower
CHICAGO, April. 17-()-The
wheat market became overloaded
Thursday with bearish war news,
highlighted by the fierce attack
on London, and prices slipped al
most a cent lower in closing deal
ings after holding up during
much of the session.
The unsettled tone of securi
ties, uncertainty about the gov
ernment program affecting wheat
and other grains, and evidence of
Improved moisture conditions In
the Ohio valley and in other lo
calities where recent rains were
badly needed were depressing
factors. In addition, the market
had to absorb hedging sales as
sociated with small amounts of
cash wheat taken by commercial
interests.
Wheat closed at or near the low
point of the session, Vt-ft lower
than yesterday, May 91Ve-, July
89-.

Weakness of Steels

Mart, Sales Less
NEW YORK, April n.-iJPr-
weaxnesa ol steels put brakes on
the stock market Thursday de
spite a mild rally of rails and
scattered industrials.
The list dropped fractions to
more than a point at the start in
slow dealings, revived around
mid-day and slipped again in the
final hour. Closing trends were
irregular. .
The Associated Press average
of 60 stocks was off .1 of a point
at 40, putting this barometer only
- of a point above the year's low.
It was a narrow market with 639
individual issues traded, or about
half the number on the exchange.
Of these 233 were up, 205 down
and 201 unchanged.
Sales were 401,490 shares
against 437,460 yesterday.
On the pessimistic side, brok
ers said, was the somewhat
gloomier war outlook, the action
of the government in pegging
steel prices in the wake of a wide
wage boost in this industry and
preparations inaugurated by
Washington to rakse an addition
al $3,500,000,000 through new
taxes.
