Livestock Opportunities in Val ley Broadening As Europe Battles By DR. W. H. LYTLE, Chief, Division of Animal Industry : State Department of Agriculture TyOT unlike the British Isles in soil and climate, known as the birthplace of our domestic animal . breeds, the Willamette valley is well fitted to carry on in Jerseys and Guernseys and many of the long wool sheep breeds should the European war decimate the flocks .and herds that so long have been regarded as the fountain head of most of our purebred livestock. Perhaps here in the valley we excel most in Jerseys. Our early breeders imported the choic est animals obtainable from the Isle of Jersey, to which this breed of dairy cattle is native, and of which it is said that no bo , , vine animal has been added to 80th An-ivwsarr Edition r Page EUrfa this district from the outside, for over five hundred years. Since 7U89iportaUoa of other- cattle into the island of Jersey has been forbidden. First Importation Jerseys were first imported into Western Oregon by the Ladds of Portland, and. since the first importation many addi tional shipments have been made directly from the Isle of Jer sey. The Jersey, while not a large animal, has taken on size here in our Willamette valley without . losing refinement and has long been . used as a com mercial farmers' breed. The Willamette valley has proved a congenial environment for Jerseys, our summer cli mate with the refreshing "trade winds" that blow In from the ocean in the warm summer af ternoons seem to stimulate the secretory functions and with our lush grasses and forage feeds and our winter kale a contin uous stage of high production is maintained. So much so that at one time not long since, Ore gon Jerseys held at the same time seven of the eight world milk production records. Along with this heavy production has gone a satisfactory livestock show performance, so that now Oregon Jerseys are well known throughout the United States and Canada. The Guernsey thrives here in western Oregon as does the Jer sey, though the breed is of much more recent establishment and like the Jersey is a channel isle native, coming from an island where no importations have been made except for immediate slaughter, for several hundred years. The channel isle breeds are well' adapted to our climate, nevertheless the Holsteins and the Ayrshire do unusually well here and numerous production records have lately been made, as have also a satisfactory live stock show exhibition ' compe tition. ' 'V It is in the long wool breeds of sheep that perhaps our Wil lamette valley breeders excel. At the Treasure Island sheep show held in San Francisco, Oregon sheep breeders in com petition with the breeders of all 'theruicip13lf& and Canada won considerably more than any other state of the whole North American sheep world. The history of sheep in Ore gon dates back to the time of the Hudson Bay company at Fort Vancouver in 1832. In Ore-" gon proper, sheep were first in troduced by Jacob P. Lease, a native of California, when a flock of 900 head followed 1250 cattle and 600 horses and mules imported to be sold to Oregon settlers. In 1854, 1500 head were sold in Marion county. No class -of livestock has been so success fully raised in Oregon as sheep. They are regarded as Oregon's ' great farm "mortgage lifters." There are 1,400,000 in eastern Oregon and y 600,000 in western' Oregon. : JWhile the . Willamette ; valley has not been . noted for.
