The number of exhibitions were ttvt and their size limited. The idea of the fair was really furnished by the farmers from the surrounding countryside, who from time to time would bring to the office of the Wood burn Independent some especial ly good showing of grain, hay, vegetables, fruit or, other pro duce from their farms and claim Pioneer Mother Memorialized By Whip Tree WALDO HILLS At least ene tree la Oreron serves as the lone memorial to a pioneer , mother. However, a bronie plaque memorialises the tree itself. This tree is the riding whip tree, growing on the old K. C. Geer land donation claim. The story goes that it was once the riding ' whip of Mrs. Timothy. Davenport, mother of the . once famous cartoonist, Homer Dav enport, A few years later, when the young mother died, she was buried In a field. For some time a little white fence kept sacred her grave, but this was finally removed and her resting place became only a memory. A few years ago the DAK. placed a bronse marker at the side of the road, telling the in terested motorists the story of The Riding Whip Tree." Recognition Earned, , The fair has grown in size and quality from these small' begin-, nings until today it is recogniz ed from coast to coast as one. of the outstanding t enterprises of its kind. It represents a fea ture of American life that is ; fast disappearing, except in the old west, me cooperative spirit" of urban and rural communities. In its exhibit , no particular industrial or agricultural en deavor is represented, but at , attempt is made to show the fruitfulness of the Willamette valley, and the creative ability and Ingenuity of its people. Granges Participate . ..Not only, the.Woodburn grange, but the granges of Butteville, Fairfield and Monitor have pre pared showings of the best pro ducts of their respective com munities. Besides the agricultur al displays, the fair has' grown to include commercial displays, flower show, a textile depart ment, hobby show, picture gal lary and other interesting1 fea tures. The citizens of Woodburn are proud of their fair and its growth. They know and appre ciate the fact that without the support of the neighboring grange members and the coope ration of the rural districts the fair could not be the successful institution that it is today.
