Ram Shipped
MONMOUTH William Riddell
received a Romney Marsh ram
direct from New Zealand, Sat
urday. It was shipped by train to
Salem from San Francisco. It is
the third importation from New
Zealand in the past month, the
other, two rams going to Clarence
Bishop of the Pendleton Woolen
mills. They were all selected by
Professor Wilson, of the Califorr
nia State Agricultural college.
Riddell's ram is from the Wheeler
flock.
Riddell was the original Rom
ney Marsh importer to the United
States from New Zealand. He be
came interested in this breed of
sheep, which is native to the Eng
lish moors, and was found there
when the Romans invaded Brit
ain hundreds of years ago. Rom
ney sheep are distributed
throughout the northwest now
with many flocks in the Willam
ette valley. This climate, seems
ideally suited to them. Riddell
made a trip to New Zealand in
1928, and selected sheep for sev
eral west coast breeders.
