Spring Sportswear Flies
New Colors for Men;
Styles Are Varied
The man who shops for sports apparel this spring finds him
self confronted with the widest assortment of interesting, new
garments ever made available. There are new sport shirts, sweat
ers, jackets, and new versions of the slack-and-shirt ensemble.
In every field, two important trends are apparent. Colors are
growing quieter, less conspicuous. Browns and tans lead the
color parade, with blues, grays, and greens following in order.
The net effect might be called a tendency toward "colorful con
servatism." Slacks, incidentally, are retaining their pleats -and their
fullness, while sports jackets will be predominently three-button,
single-breasted in pronounced plaids of tan and blue com
binations. Campus "musts" this spring are jackets of big yarn
materials such as cashmeres and shetlands, and the slacks that!
go with them are usually in contrasting colors
Tailoring Makes Strides
he OREGON STATESMAN, Salem,
But it is in tailoring that the
greatest strides have been nutde.
In slack-and-shirt suits, for ex
ample, tailoring excellence has
reached a point virtually on a par
with the work done on the finest
suits. Such important details as
seam finishing, button holes.
pockets, and even belt loops are
painstakingly fashioned for qual-
are so well tailored that they mayj
be worn as well with a tie as
without. Finer woven fabrics, in
cluding the gabardines, twills
poplins, and coverts, are pre
dominantly featured, and it i!
noted that many of the more pop
ular garments are of crown testec
spun rayon fabrics, thoroughly
Ity and durability. Shirt collars tested for fabric strength, seam
strength, fastness tog sunlight,
land cleanabilty.
Buy f6r Comfort j
Looking at the entire men's
'sportswear picture foil this sea
son, it is easy to see tfiat manu
facturers are now fully recogniz
ing the fact that men pbuy sports
apparel primarily fo comfort,
and that they must look smart in
order to be comfortable. So
they've put better fall-around
quality in their merchandise to
enable it to stand hard-: wear and
still retain its good looks.
Color, and lots of it, Is the key
note for sports accessories this
year, with gay combinations of
red, white and blue promising to
add a touch of Americana to the
wardrobe of every will-dressed
gentleman.
The spring and summer months
of 1941 will see no radical change
in either the fabrics oil styling of
such accessories as sfrirts, ties,
sweaters and the miscellaneous
odds and -ends of hajberdashery
that lend distinction aid variety
to the masculine ensemble. The
important innovation s the up
swing in popularity of bright
and contrasting colors combina
tions, especially in spbrts wear,
and it is here that the patriotic
motif should be prominent.
Tailors have introduced a
promising new color for sports
wear called "Air Blue," for which
accessories; with a striped de
sign of red and white are widely
popular. That this combination is
destined lor popularity is the
opinion of the majority of cloth
ing merchants who have laid in
large stocks of haberdashery in
combinations of red and white,
blue and white, or of all three.
This is especially prominent in
braces, garters, sports belts and
handkerchiefs.
During the past several years,
men have shown a growing in
clination to forsake formality in
clothes for more comfortable
sports and semi-sports, wear. This
trend should reach its peak this
summer, the stylists predict.
As proof, they point to the
men's choice of shirts, where the
reigning favorite is the button -down
Oxford in solid colors or
with stripes on white.
1941 Fashion Notes
This soft-collar vogue, incident
ally, is bringing back the heavy
wool -knit necktie which is most
popular in wide, horizontal stripes
of gay contrasting colors. For
summer wear, light-weight print
ed wool ties in a variety of
bright patterns will make a strong
bid for predominance over the
more firmly established crepes
and foulards.

Modern Furniture
Shows Treatment
That's New
Home furnishing styles of 1941
have crystalized into two distinct
groups:
The best interpretation of con
temporary or modern, since that
style was introduced in this coun
try in 1926.
A crisper, smaller-scaled . type
of 18th Century mahogany, and
Early American maple.
These are the conclusions
reached following an inspection
of the new furnishings as received
in the stores, following visits of
buyers to the nation's home fur
nishings centers in January. The
shipments of new merchandise
have all arrived, and are now
on display. The new merchandise
is slightly, if any, more costly
than previously, but sharper ad
vances are likely from now on,
due to increased costs of raw
material and labor.
The "modern" furniture of to
day has lost the arcs and angles
which characterized the first
modern design, and the waterfall
type which was greatly over-done,
is gradually giving away to a
stream-lined architectural type.
This is the indication one gets on
a visit to local stores.
There are three distinct types
of finish being used on the mod
ern: a brown pencil-stripe wal
nut; a bleached finish for both
mahogany and walnut and some
maple; and a dark Cordovan or
ox-blood red tone. The bowed
front is being used on dressers
and chests, and old fashioned
"pulls" are giving way to re
cessed slits, which are complete
ly hidden, yet which make it
easy to pull out drawers.
U. S. Modern
Every type of furniture is get
ting modern treatment. The old
fashioned cedar chest has a
modern counterpart in a storage
console, which may be used with
decorative success in any room in'
the home. There are combination
bookcases and desks, which may
be used in conjunction with sec
tional sofas, to completely Ime
the walls of a room. Some beds
have lost their headboards; others
have upholstered head and feet.
It's distinctly American-modern,
unrelated to earlier European
note
and
more
styles. Its closest counterpart is
the "Swedish modern" of a I year
or so ago, but all agree that the
new flavor is distinctly "United
States."
The traditional furniture of pe
riod design has taken on a more
elegant note: Chippendale is! giv
ing way to Sheraton and Hepple
white, with bowed fronts and at
tractive antiqued gold finish hard
ware pulls. The stores haVe a
more adequate showing of l8th
Century, than formerly witjh a
varied array from which to select.
Early I American furniture is
holding its own in popularity. The
reddish brown finish prevalent
for a number of years is showing
some variation a lighter
here, a darker note there,
here, too, the selection is
complete than formerly.
So far as upholstered furniture
is concerned, "stripes" are
decorative favorite in fabrics.
Small gay figures in 18th Century
styles, and textured weaves in
modern decor are other high
lights. Pile fabrics continue to
hold their place, with mohair till
the longest-wearing material, j
You'll note plastic furniture
here and there in the stores. this
is one of the trends to watch! jThe
first plastic furniture has much
to recommend it jn. shape knd
color, and it's conceivable that
many of our homes a decade or
less hence will be wearing fjur
nishings in plastic.
Buying Made Easy
Ensemble selling of home fur
nishings has reached the point
where ho woman needs to become
confused in the selection of furni
ture for her home. Manufaetur-r
ers and retailers are working to
gether toward a greater correla
tion of both colors and fabrics,
and the result is not only flatter
ing to the woman's taste, but very
soothing to her troubled mind, j
She can now select a basic style
that most appeals to her, such as
modern, 18th Century, French,
etc., and can devolop a satisfac
tory and original decorative
scheme merely by selecting other
pieces in the same ensemble
grouping in the store's color abd
fabric selection. I

PEBBLES OUT
One of the fast-increasing fav
orites in footwear is the cut-out
sandal originally designed for
beach wear. Impervious to mois
ture, because of an aniline dye
process, these sandals are also
splendidly comfortable for loung
ing, and country strolls (where
there are no .pebbles to get in
the sandal: and if one should get
in it can be shaken out with
out removing the shoe.)
SHARE HONORS
Woodh canvas, rattan, reed, and
wrought iron share honors with
the more frequently known metal
type, outdoor furnishings. Typical
of the growing feeling of friendli
ness with South America and its
traditions, are the sets whose dazz
ling colors are constant reminders
of gayety and vividness found in
Guatamala. j
FOR TRAVEL
Boys and girls alike seem; -to
share enthusiasm for aeronautical
motifs, and there is no need for
them to be disappointed for new
bedroom suites have been styled

travel airplanes. Blonde and
dark mahogany, wax birch, and
enamel continue to increase in
popularity lor , juvenile furnish
ings.
