Steels Move to Front
but Lose Later; Tax
Fears Are Bullish
NEW YORK; March 14-()-Except
for quiet strength of spe
cialties and assortment of senior
issues, stocks were unable to make
touch headway in odays market.
Steels were out in front at; the
start but backed down to where
they left off Thursday. A little
selling at the last reduced or can
celled early gains of fractions to
a point or so in many instances.
A few odd-lot stocks managed to
merge with advances of 2 to 5.
" The Associated Press average
of 60 stocks was unchanged at
41.4. Of more than 1200 issues
listed on the exchange only 588
were traded. Dealings were slack
throughout and transfers totaled
320,041 shares against 339,050 the
day before.
Outstanding news inspiration
was scarce, brokers said, although
some early buying : was based on
the belief the market had dis
counted a lot of unfavorable do
mestic and foreign happenings
and was on shape to turn about
if offered any encouragement.
Earnings statements and com
pany profits prospects buoyed by
defense spending helped individ
ual shares.
Bullish restraints still were
seen in the outlook for soaring
taxes, cloudier war developments
as air bombing raids were in
tensified over England and Ger
many, and in the confusing la
bor picture as related to defense
industries.
While this week's motor pro
duction jumped to the highest
level for any week since mid
day, 1937, automotive stocks were
as
mixed as other departments.

Wheat Prices
Move Upward
French Grain Requests
and Oriental Demand
Lend Incentive
CHICAGO, March 14 -(JP)-Wheat
prices moved upward in a
creeping recovery today that re
flected strength- in certain other
commodities and general market
implications of stepped up do
mestic industrial activity and
British requirements under the
lend-lease law.
Wheat trades had nothing defi
nite on which to base purchase
orders except reports of oriental
demand on the Pacific coast and
renewal of French -requests for
grain. For that reason, buying
was not on a large, scale and was
rather timid. At the same time,
international developments, in
cluding dispatch of a British food
mission to the US, and the grow
ing aerial warfare over Europe,
with British offensive action in
evidence, 'were factors that could
not be ignored.
Wheat dipped about cent at
the start, later steadied and at
one time rallied for new gains
of 2-4 cent. The close was Va-'s
higher than yesterday, May 86's
