might have been a hundred, so
shrunken did he seem and he
might have stepped straight out
of medieval Germany as far
as his clothes were concerned.
He wore the black caftan of
Jewry, and about his lofty fore
head, below a black skull-cap
which rested upon his white
hair, were bound the ancient
phylacteries. A pair of iron
rimmed spectacles rested upon
his beak of a nose. Though his
face was turned down to his
book, the eyes were closed as
Eloffer could see from where
he stood In the, doorway.
For a while Kloffer stood
without moving, looking at the
old Rabbi Ephxalm, whom he
had known all his life and whom
ha had ever regarded as his
mentor and guide. From .the
very early days when he was
but a little boy and Rachel,
his mother, had been alive, he
had coma to the Rabbi Ephraim
with all his problems and aU
1114 sorrows. Ephraim had been
an old man even In those distant
days. He must be well over
ninety now.
The Rabbi stirred suddenly
and turned his venerable head
' slowly towards the door. He
lifted a hand, so thin as to ap
pear almost transparent, and
gently stroked his long stragg
ling beard. He peered blindly
towards the door quite unable
to see that far.
"Who Is there? he asked In
his tired. Quavering voice. "Is
that you, Raphael?!.
-No, Rabbi." replied Eloffer.
"It is L Hermann Rothstein.
The effect of his words was
instantaneous and pathetic, for
the old man made a visible el
fort to force bis aged eyes to
peer across the room. His long.
thin hands came out groping
.towards Kloffer with a feeble.
"Hermaa."
