Bean Postpones
Petroleum Case
Ormond R. Bean, state utilities
commissioner, Thursday an
nouqeed postponement by him of
the petroleum case hearing orig
inally set to open next Monday In
Portland. This hearing was set on
complaint of the Asbury Trans
portation Co., and other large
trucking Interests against the Un
ion Pacific and other railroads
Originally it was planned that the
Oregon commissioner and the ICC
complaints would be merged In a
joint hearing next Monday, but
word has reached Bean of the
postponement of the ICC case un
til March.

Outlines Stand
Leader Issues ' Statement
on Recommendations
by Organization
The i Oregon! Anti-Liquor
league, through B. N. Hicks, 'su
perintendent, Thursday issued a
statement outlining its position on
certain liquor bills now before
the legislature. : ' Hi 'j '''"
. Hicks said the league has gone
on record favoring ft chemical as
alysis of the blood and urine of
persons arrested for, drunken
driving. Approval also was given
the measure placing the sale of
all liquors containing more than
14 per cent of alcohol, by weight,
in state liquor stores and agencies.
The league has taken no action
on a bill increasing the tax on
fortified wines from 15 to SO
cents a gallon. I
A bill that would prevent the
liquor control commission irom
niacins: aeents in i the field to
check on licensees is opposed by
me league.
Opposition also was voiced to a
bill providing that fortified wines
may be sold through package
stores, restaurants and hotels.
"This bill would obstruct the
freedom of the state liquor con
trol commission," i the league
statement read.
The league favors a bill making
it unlawful to drink hard liquors
in public places and on any high
way In the state.
Another bill approved by the
league provides that liquor sold
by the liquor control commis
sion shall be delivered to the per
son holding the permit and not to
a proxy. .
Senate Approves
New Set Nets Fee
The senate Thursday approved a
house amendment increasing the
license fee on set nets from 2.50
to 5. each,-;-. ' .i -
The senate had attempted to
increase the fee to $3 but this was
considered too high by members
of the house fishing industries
committee.
Two Famed New Zealand Rams Arrive
Here for Clarence Bishop New tarm
y Delivery Thursday in Salem of
two Romney-Marsh rams from
New Zealand to Clarence Bishop
of Portland drew intense Interest
of sheepmen in this area.
The sheep, to be used as breed
ing stock, are the second importa
tion of this particular breed in
the Willamette valley. Not since
1904 when William Riddell of
Polk county was the Importer
have any been brought here.
Valuable both as mutton pro
ducers ahd for the unusual tex
ture of their wool which is said
to be at once both coarse and fine,
the two rams delivered here were
selected for Mr. Bishop by F. L.
Wilson, specialist at the California
Agricultural college at Davis,
when he was in New Zealand, re
cently.
Bishop, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.
P. Bishop of Salem and active in
the family's woolen; mills opera
tions, has recently ; purchased a
farm in Yamhill county, across the
river and approximately a mile
above Champoeg, where the rams
have been taken. They will be
brought back to Salem, probably
