mild. raJlylox mood, .today . bat
many leaders failed to maintain
the forward stride of Wednes
day.- ; "
Actlre Issues mored op and
down by fractions throughout the
session. There were a few wider
adranees at the close on small
turnorers. Tbe majority of plrot-
al stocks finished well under the
best and minus sl$ns were plenti
ful.
The Associated Press arerage
of 60 stocks was ahead .3 of a
point at 41.4. of 684 Individual
Issues traded, 340 were up, 1S4
down and 190 unchanged. Deal
lngs were relatirely slack through
out. Transfers amounted to 422,'
830 shares compared with 492,'
860 the day before.
Analysts were none too well
pleased at the evident reluctance
of the list to show more rigor on
the extension of the upswing
which had been attributed mainly
to technical factors lnrolved In
the lengthy retreat.
General Motors, after the close,
made public Its preliminary earn
ings statement for 1940 showing
14.32 a common share against
14.04 in 1939. Heavy provisions
for mounting taxes cut sharply
Into per-share net for the cor
poration. Actually earnings topped
last year by $92,500,000 but taxes
took $80,300,000 from the in
crease. - The stock on the day
was up at 43. Chrysler was
unchanged at 65.
Allied Chemical and J. I. Case
were up 2 each. Lesser improve
ment was recorded for US Steel,
Toungstown Sheet, Sears Roe
buck, American Telephone, Ana
conda, Kennecott, Paramount,
Loft, NT Shipbuilding, General
Electric and, Consolidated Cigar.

Mediocre ; market ' possIblUUes

the ; coming fall unless some un-

the Industry. N. L. Bennlon.. ex
tension poultryman for pre son
state college told SS breeders
Thursday at the Salem chamber
of commerce. Numerous birds In
cold storage holdings and the
number of breeders intending to
raise poults indicates a market
price no better than last fall, he
said.
Dr. E. M. Dickinson. coHere
poultry veterinarian, in outlining
the purpose of the Oregon Turkey
Growera ImproYement associa
tion, announced that unless turkey
growers made an organized ef
fort to wipe out turkey pullorum,
Oregon breeders faced the dis
astrous situation Which California
turkey growers encountered a year
or so ago, wnen eastern raisers
refused egg shipments because of
the prevalence of pullorum.
Colored films of the industry

Potato Survey Is
Housewife's Boon
A potato survey which the state
department of agriculture is now
conducting In .the Portland retail
channels will be the basis for
gathering information which will
be of benefit to growers, shippers,
retailers and consumers, reports
Prank MeKennon, chief of the de

- Am on g factors ' which the sur
rey will seek to determine are
damage and deterioration in tran
sit, types "of containers, damage
in retail stores, consumer prefer

Retail stores were chosen for
the survey because here Is best
reflected the reaction of the house
