Deal - CHICAGO, Dec. 30-(n-Poten ' tlal rather than actual demand kept train prices on a firm -basis today. Implications of economic aspects of the national defense program, the president's speech and reports of depleted flour and cash wheat stocks in private bands were factors which, if not stimulating purchases of grain futures, at least limited sales .tanylnnln tori. lizatlon of a large portion of the domestic wheat and corn surplus was a strengthening factor. Wheat prices were up about cent, at times to the best levels since early in the mouth but prices fluctuated nervously, May contracts dipping below the pre vious close. Final quotations were li lower to, V higher than Sat urday, May 8-. July 81 . Although there has .been no heavy trade in flour for some time, reports told of expanding in quiry. Southwest flour business the past week was described as encouraging for this time of year. Several 5000 to 10,000 bar rel sales were reported and a chain baker took 200,000 barrels. Some of the strength of July nd September contracts was at tributed to reports of widely dis tributed rust deposits on winter grains In Kansas and disappear ance of the snow covering. To morrow will be the last day for filing applications for loans on wheat collateral. Announcement that no extensions on grain stored In commercial warehouses will be made when loans expire was in terpreted by traders as an indi cation that unless prices advance between now and . spring fairly large quantities may be turned over to the government. Dee. 30-OPV-The stock market extended its year end recovery today as t swelling waned and sold-out customers re instated some of their commit ments. '- Gains ranged from fractions to around 2 points although top marks were met in many instances at the close. Issues with a war flavor were most prominent on the upside but virtually all de partments participated In the re covery. . The Associated Press average of CO stocks held a net advance of .4 of a point at 43.8. It was the third successive upturn for this composite and the day's lm provement was the best since Nov. 9. While lively dealings of the forenoon slackened later, trans fers totalled 1,179,277 against 1, 272,710 last Friday. Reasons for the further come back trend varied. Part of the bullishness was attributed to the president's blast at the dictators and his opinion that the axis pow ers were certain losers; to indi cations armament spending would be stepped up briskly, and to the generally right prospects for busi ness and industry. There was a smattering of new year's highs registered, including Timken-Detrolt Axle and Mack Truck. These, like a number of others, apparently were bought on the idea they would benefit from large war orders. In the advancing column were US Steel. Bethlehem, Dow Chemi cal, Westinghonse, Johns-Man-ville, Eastman Kodak, American Can, Air Reduction, Kennecott, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, NY Cen tral, Chrysler, Yellow Truck, Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, J. I. Case, Douglas Air craft and Consolidated Edison. American Suger Refining was up 1 and the preferred 3 when the company declared a 60- cent dividend on the common. The previous payment was 25 cents in July, 1938.
