United - States 1640 wheat . pro

possibility of a record carryover
at the end of this season, had a
depressing Influence on prices
here today, but scattered buying
credited to mills steadied the market-
'
.Wheat dipped as much as

quently and closed unchanged to
higher compared with yester
day, December 88H-H. May
S4H-H. Some support attributed
to dealers covering previous short
sales, mostly traders obligated to
deliver grain on December con
tracts who bought hack. some of
these options due to approach of
the Saturday deadline for trad
ing. Traders said yesterday's gov
ernment report practically "dis
covered" approximately 24,000,
000 bushels of wheat that had
not been accounted for in pre
vious figures. They attributed the
"discovery" largely to an increase
in the winter wheat acreage which
brought the year's total produc
tion to 816,698,000 bushels. They
said that if domestic consumption
and exports do not exceed expec
tations carryover next July 1 may
be near 400,000,000 bushels, com
pared with 284,000,000 last July
1. However, approximately 270,
000,000 bushels of this surplus
now is under government loans.
