Market as Sentiment
Turns for Worst
NEW YORK, Dec.
The itock market backed down
under relatiyely light pressure to
day aa Wall street peculatire
sentiment took a turn for the
worse.
Leading Industrials, with steels
In front, were the principal suf
ferers. Losses of fractions to
around S points were fairly well
distributed at the elose. A few
mnior recoyerles were In eyidence
at the final gong.
The Associated Press average
of CO Issues was off .4 of a point,
largest drop for this composite
since November 27. On the other
hand, transfers amounted to 159,
870 shares compared with 961,
450 last Friday when trends
pointed upward.
In addition to a little more
year-end tax selling, traders in
clined to lighten accounts in the
wake of the president's statement
at Warm Springs that he would
return there next March "If the
world survives." Considered a bit
ominous also, marketwlse, was
the warning of Defense Commis
sioner Knudsen to the machine
tool industry that "if you could
see as I do from the inside the
terrible urgency of the situation"
a quick speedup of production
would get under way.
All of this led financial quar
ters to the thought that some
emergency was confronting the
country that was not generally
known. Under the circumstances,
brokers said, a little bearlshness
was logical.
There were several new 1940
lows recorded, among which was
Reynolds Tobacco "B,"
Prominent on the slide were
TJS Steel, Bethlehem, Chrysler,
Eastman Kodak, US Gypsum,
Sears Roebuck, American Tele
phone, Union Carbide, Westing
bouse, Dow Chemical, General
Electric, American Smelting, US
Rubber and International Harvester.
Farmers to Talk

2 Cent Drop Is
Felt by Futures
Wheat Contracts Hit Lowest
Level Since November;
Flour Reduced Some
CHICAGO, Dec. 1 6-(P)-Wheat
futures prices dropped almost two
cents a bushel today, May and
July contracts, the latter repre
senting the new 1941 crop, touch
ing the lowest level since No
vember 7. December wheat, In
which trading will cease Satur
day, was the lowest since Novem
ber 27.
Pit - brokers blamed selling
largely on the favorable domestic
crop situation, reports of increased
marketings at some points, con
tinued dull mill and floor trade
and the lower trend of securi
ties. Wheat closed at or near the
session's low, point, 1-1 cents
lower than "Saturday, December
87-, May 83-, July 78-
July wheat fell to a level almost
30 cents lower than a year ago,
when the market was advancing
due to the poorest winter wheat
crop condition on record as well
as bullish implications of the war.
Recent private reports stressed the
good condition of the 1941 crop
and since then further beneficial
snows have been received, capped
by depositing of a heavy protec
tive blanket over many districts
the last few days. The official
government report on acreage and
condition will be released Friday.
Flour prices were reduced In
some areas but there were no late
reports of any unusual business.
