They talk as if the men who do register without protesting like the idea, or at least don't mind it. When as a matter of fact, they are acting like real men and do ing what their government tells them it is necessary to do for the protection of the country. The Methodist minister at Woodburn wrote as though he felt safe in registering because he was sure he would be pro tected under the ruling made by the government for people like him. The government has made that concession to them, but I don't know why. It isn't fair. Why should there he any discrimina tion? It seems that thes people are really using their religion to hide behind. If they feel that way about it and consider it right and think their religion should exempt them, then why not let the other men out on general principles of warfare? Why not all be objec tors? What do they think would happen then? It isn't necessary to have religion for a shield for people to have objections to war. I'm sure most of the men would rather not be drafted if the coun try could be made safe without it. If everything could be made secure for us by religion 1 think that would be the best way' in the world to do it; but unfortu nately, men like Hitler are not considering settling matters that way; many conscientious objec tors 1b a country makes things easier for him; and will all the sabotaging going ou here he is doubtless at work on us ris;ht now; and if we're-ever faced with an invasion by him, these con scientious objectors will find that preaching won't stop Hitler. It takes bombs and ballets for him. The religious influence should the task to which they are called and which they gladly assume. These young men, many scarce ly more than boys, come in large numbers from homes where high moral and religious standards are held; where safeguards for clean living are maintained. Al cohol in smallest quantities af fects the brain and hence, skill and mental acumen are impaired. These qualities are more highly important today in a defense pro gram than ever before. The man who pilots the plane, the man who operates the anti-aircraft gun, the man who gives the or ders must be mentally alert, with a brain not dulled by alcohol. One of the first effects of even small quantities of alcoholic li quors is to loosen the tongue and now at a time when fifth column ists and sptes from other coun tries are seeking to gain military information which would harm our country, it is highly import ant that no alcohol he allowed to be served to our men. The fall of the French republic is the present warning to us. The official report of the Council of Ministers of the Vichy govern ment ascribes its fall to the use of liquor by the men In the army during the Inactive months of the past winter. The Council reported that in one hospital alone during the month of January. 1 940. there were 814 cases of delirium tremens. On the other hand Ger many declare that to conquer the world their army mast ab stain from alcohol. If this is true, abstinence from alcohol is nec essary for the defense of the world. The fine legislation -which protected the American army in 1917-18 has been repealed. The distillers, the brewers and vint ners now have a free field in the main. For the protection of our coun try, the defense of oar institu Declares Ickes Is Making an Empire Say Public Laud Policy May"Adverely Affect Western Economy SPOKANK, Wash.. Dec. t-JF-MUler Freeman of Seattle, pub lisher of Mining World and a member of the state planning council, charged today that "pres ent public laud policy ' was ex panding the uatlonal park system into an "Ickes empire" at the ex pense of state resources. "If the present movement Is not checked, principles of public land administration will be estab lished under Interior Secretary Harold Ickes that will adversely affect the economic life of west ern states. Freeman charged la a talk at the Northwest Mining association convention. "When congress refused to ap propriate funds for a corridor ex tending from the Olympic nation al park (in western Washington) to the ocean, he (Ickes) used PWA funds, which he controls," the councilman added. He suggested that the associa tion invite Senator Pat McCarran. chairman of the public lands com mittee, to hold hearings in this and other western states and make a "thorough Investigation lato public land policy. Natives Revolting In French Colony HANOI. French Indo - China, Dec. 6-(TburBday)-(;p)-Twenty native police were killed, nine others are missing and 21 were wounded in new native uprisings in western Cochin China, the southern tip of French Ludo-China, it was reported today. French authorities arrested nu merous leaders In the revolts and prepared to send gunboats to that sector in a demonstration of strength. The revolt came while there was a lull In the fighting on the Indo-Chtna-Thai (Siam) border. The French announced that "re prisals for Siamese attacks" had been halted "to permit diplomats every opportunity to effect a set tlement" but there was no word here on progress of the negotia tions. The border situation seemed definitely improved. The only In cident reported yesterday was the flight of three Thai warp lanes over Polpet, which was not bombed.
