100 Tons Beans Co
Daily to Cannery
STAYTOJf The peak of the
season for the later rarlety of
beans has been reached this week
with 100 tons of beans pouring
into the Stayton cannery dally.
The crop is thought to be the
best since 1936.
There are enough bean pickers
to handle the crop with approxi
, mately 7000 pickers. The migra
tory labor camp on the Lafky farm
now has a population of 1400 peo
ple, and there are no -scant tents.
Some families are moring to hop
yards but the tents are being filled
from waiting lists of pickers.
Picker who register at the
farm labor camp receiye 2 in food
stamps for eTery member of the
family, which is paid back by
working at the camp for 35 cents
an hour. Some of the food stamps
may be applied only toward pur
chase of surplus products, while
the remainder are good for any
foods, but not liquor or tobacco.

In a , -thin- market In which
there was. little Tublic participa
tion but operators on the "long"
side were cheered by the fact the
movement seemed to be in con
tinuation of the risinr trend.
The Associated 'Press arerage
of CO leading shares rose .7 of
a point at 42.. helping to eradi
cate much, of last- week's losses.
Transactions totaled only 360,-
Sio, but that was an lmprore-
ment oyer yesterday's 242,800.
The rise waa the biggest In three
weeks.
Signalizing heightened confi
dence In the state of British de
fenses : and In. the offensive
action of the royal air- force
was the fact the day's best boosts
were among the war stocks,
steels, motors, alrcrafts, chemi
cals and metals.
Prime Minister Churchill's
statement of Tuesday that Great
Britain was maklnr war plans
more than two years ahead, con
tributed strongly to those shares'
support. At the same time mar
ketmen expect such securities to
be primarily affected by Amer
ica's rearmament.
Improred action In metals
shares followed announcements
of price rises for both scrap cop
per and lead and a report that
refiners' supplies of lead had de
creased to the smallest in years.
Alrcrafts recelred a boost
from United Aircraft corpora
tion's announcement of a $15,-
