straggling 'Recovery in
Aircraft . and Steels
Noted Wednesday
NEW YORK, An.:. 14-tfp-
Beiling diminished in the stock
market today, permitting ft stra
Kilns recover? In alrerafts, steels
and other groups hardest hit by
tke war news scare in the pre-
- Tions session.
After a flurry of bavins around
th opening lifting some stocks
a polnj or more, the rally waned.
Noting the London markets re
fused to be flustered by the big
aerial attacks oil England, Wall
Street traders took the war re
ports more calmly, brokers said.
Nevertheless. - there .was an ob
vious tendency In trading circles
to operate cautiously while the,
outcome of the battle of England
remained in doubt.
A little short-corerlnr was suf
ficient to stllf en prices as offer
ings slackened. Aircraft were
strengthened by a rise in Doug
las on announcement tne war
plane manufacturer planned to
spend $20,000,000 for the expan
sion or its productive capacity in
soumera California. Douglas end-
a ih higher at 68.
Trade reports indicating steel
oraers suii were running at a
high level helped the stocks of
that industry for a time. Bethle-
nam was up more than a point on
the rally but lost the gain to
finish slightly down at 74. US
Steel retained a fractional gain.
-The Associated Press compos
ite of CO stocks ended .3 of a
point down at 41.4. Transactions
