the site of orders was not
revealed, export Circles here heard
today that American hop-growers
have moved into the South Amer
ican market, breaking Italy's and
- Germany's gripsj
The market has been held by
Germany and Italy for decades
and since the start of the Euro
pean war Germany's "customer
pledges have been fulfilled by
shipments through Italy.
Contracts for 1940 hops have
been signed at 35 cents a pound
for seeded and 41 cents for seed
less, a substantial profit for the
growers, the brokers said. About
100,000 bales half the Oregon-Washington-California
1940 crop
were tied" up by previous con
tracts calling for from 22 to 25
cents a pound.
Slaughter House
i Scales Are Worst
Sections of Oregon vary , great
ly in the manner in wfiich heavy
dnty scales are cared for, but
on the whole only a small per
centile of scales operators or
users are . iatentionally giving
false weights, declares Arden A.
Reed, deputy state' sealer of
weights and measures with the
state department of agriculture.
He has found the worst cases of
Inaccurate scales so far this sea
son at slaughter house scales.
..About 25 per cent of heavy
duty scales tested in southern
and western Oregon this season,
have been condemned, though
requirements have been4enlent.
In the eastern part of the
state, scales are cared for much
better and fewer condemnations
have been made. Climatic differ
ences may have something to do
with this.
