Find Opposition From
Exhibitors
v By HUBBARD KEAVY
HOLLYWOOD. April 20-n-,
"Sou pnt nickel In here and the
' music comes- out there end the
film goes round and round. i
And If the film . goes around
often enough nay. about 300
time a week In each machine
Ion it a million dollars - worth of
nick sis . ':
Ana in pnouc. iwr na jituca.
not only hears a two-snd-a-nsir
minute musical recording . but
sees the orchestra as well and
presumably Is OTercome with de
HghC .
Th prediction, as made by the
hnri whit ir interested In -these
portable moTie theaters, is very
"rosy. The outlook-; like the ne
onle 'decor of their instruments,
positively I glows. i -
The nickel-in-the-slot movie Is
Just around the corner. In fact,
two companies have similar ma
chines and if things go the way
they're supposed to, 30.000 of
them will be adorning the nation's
cocktail bars and saloons and ho
tel lobbies within the next 12
months.' t," .
OPPOMTIOX ARISES
Naturally opposition has aris
ta. Exhibitors, with big invest
ments. In theatres, say they see
real competition, j Organized pro
tests, . in, some middle-western
cities, already are underway.
' In Hollywood, one bears talk
about "cheap moTies harming
major pictures. but few believe
barroom merles will keep people
from attending the regular theatres.-
James .Roosevelt, the presi
dent's ' movie-making son. will
produce films for a Chicago 'No
velty company which expects to
have1 IS. 000 machines completed
within a year. Roosevelt's com
pany will iilm 313 different two-and-a-half
minute subjects a year.
Six will be on each reel: it'll
cost you a nickel per subject.
.Another firm, formed here by
a fen i ran ursaiu ana pruauc
er Sam Sax, is ready with a com
petitive machine. This company
will film 1U own pictures. The
Orsattt-Sax film box resembles
an over-sised record player, with
the screen about IS by 24 inches
In the face! The -machine the
Mills company is making to play
the Roosevelt films Is similar in
sppearance. except its screen is
on the top of the box.
FSB SM.tIJi FILM
The pictures will be on 16
millimeter film. The screens are
ao shielded' that, even at a dis
tance of 0 feet and in ordinary
light, the pictures are quite easy
to see. Roosevelt says his films
will be visible to persons as far
as 110 feet away. I
The projector Is not unlike
those nsed for home movies. Me
chanically, the operation is dif
ferent: The projector is m tne
bottom of . the box and the picture
Is put onto the back "of the
screen by means of mirrors. The
sound, of course, 4s on a "track"
attached to the film. The.. box
also cob tains a cooling system.
Exhibitors .told Roosevelt In
Chicago recently- thst salacious,
films were bound to get into some
ef the machines. Roosevelt said
he didn't, believe -that that was
much of a problem; that police
and censors would soon put a stop
to It.
"I suppose there will be some
ebjeetionable films." - he said
here the other day. "I hear you
can buy - 'dirty movies' . now for
tar parties. If yen want them..
Producers Sax says he'll keep
Indecent film out of his ma
chines la this way: -"We'll put It
la cur contracts . that if any qIh
jectlonable films. are put Into our
machines, well take 'em back."

Gulliver "Dubbed"
Before Completion
Sound Recording Done on
Film Before Pictures
on Negatives
For the ' first time in Holly
wood history, a picture was
"dubbed" before It was complete
ly photographed!
The picture is Paramount's
feature-length animation, "Gulli
ver's Travels." now showing at
the State theatre.
"Dubbing is' a technical name
in the movies for the mixing of
sound tracks and recording the
mixture on a single strip of nega
tive film from which prints are
made for the theatres. Normally,
a motion picture is completely
photographed before "dubbing Is
started. The finished film is tak
en Into a room and innumerable
sounds ranging from music to
traffic noises previously recorded
on separate strips of film are,
"mixed" and recorded on a single
strip of film. This frequently re
quires several weeks.
The delay was avoided In a
novel manner by -Dave Fleischer,
director of "Gullivers Travels.
In the making of a cartoon, the
cartoon is first drawn in-pencil
and photographed. , This is used
to check action and edit the film.
These drawings are Identical with
the completed color drawings
from whi' the feature is photo
graphed. Fleischer had these pencil
drawings of scenes which have
not been completed In- color, cut
into the complete color film and
used them in scoring and dub
bing the picture.
The underscore was composed
by Victor Young and underlies
the entire picture. Paramount's
symphony orchestra waa used to
record the Young score. ,
