US Steel Dividend Voted
" Just After Close
of Market
NEW YORK. March t.-VP-Traders
continued to bid up spe
cialities In today's stock market
while permitting most leaders to
drift-moderately lower.
The best news of the day came
Jnst after the 'close when U. S.
steel directors - surprised ' Wall
street by voting a -dividend of ?1
, a share on the" common, first pay
ment on this issne since December
1137.. Chairman Stettlnins ex-
d 1 a 1 n e d the disbursement "is
based on ' the corporation's earn
tags during recent months."
Previously speculative sent!
mcnt appeared to " hare been de
pressed by a sharp tumble Of the
"free" British pound sterling to
the lowest level on record In
terms of the old gold dollar.
Stock dealings were of a hap
hazard character throughout, with
trends at variance In the major
ity of departments. The Associa
ted Press average of CO stocks fin
ished off .1 of a point at 49.3.
Transfers amounted to 622,700
shares against 694,990 the day
before.
That the dividend action of the
"big steel" board caught the fi
nancial sector napping was shown
by the fact the company's Junior
stack was slightly under water
during the greater part of the ses
sion. It finished off H of a point
at 54 and Bethlehem was 4 in
arrears at 74.
Declines were posted for Chry
sler, US Rubber, Montgomery
.Ward, Anaconda, Allied Chemi
cal. N. Y. Central, and South Por
to Rico sugar. Quiet strength was
exhibited by Brunswick - Balke.
Canada Dry, Sears Roebuck and
Great Northern.

Wool in Boston
BOSTON, March 26 (AP) (USDA)
Trading ia wool waa very quiet today
on the Boston market. Practically no in
terest wa being shown in spot greasy
abort domestic wools. Small order were
reported to have been placed on good
French combing length fine territory
wools in original bags for July delivery
at around 78 to 80 centa; acoured basis,
delivered to mill.
Wheat Pit's Tone
Easy; Prices Down
CHICAGO, March 26.-(;P)-An
easy tone prevailed in the wheat
pit today and prices at times
yielded as much as 1 cents a
bushel.
Prospects of warmer and unset
tled weather in the southwest and
pressure of hedging sales against
purchases of loan wheat depressed
the market. Selling was only mod
erate, but at the same time de
mand was less aggressive than re
cently. Quotations opened fractionally
lower, recovered partly, but then
declined again in the final hour.
May contracts dropping to $1.05
off 1, and July to $1.034,
down 1 cents. Weakness at
Minneapolis, where prices were
off as much as 1 and finished
at their lows, contributed to the
late downturn here.
Wheat here finished
off. May $1.05-, July $1.04
