An 18-man Salem high school
boxing squad, under Coach George
Sirnio, will enter the state nigh
school boxing tournament at Ore
gon City tonight, Friday and Sat
urday, it was announced yester

A special election on petitions
to create the proposed Washing
ton county people's utility dis
trict will be held May 17, the
state hydroelectric commission an-
anounced yesterday. The final
petition reached the commission
yesterday morning.
The district would eembrace
536 square miles with an as
sessed valuation of $22,465,214.
Forest Grove and approximately
15 square miles surrounding that
city would be excluded from the
project.
Preliminary petitions for crea
tion of the Central Oregon
peoples utility district, including
parts of Jefferson, Deschutes and
Crook counties, were filed
Wednesday. Irrigable lands in
Crook and Deschutes counties and
lands to be irrigated in Jefferson
county would be included in the
Central Oregon project.
Hearing on the Central Oregon
peoples utility district petitions
will be held later.

Spring Extension School to Open
March 25; Courses in Education,
History and Law to Be Provided
Residents of Salem and vicinity
who wish to continue or begin
college or university classes will
have an opportunity during the
coming three months, when the
general extension division of the
Oregon state system of higher ed
ucation will hold classes in room
S-H of the old Salem high school.
Each course, meeting two hours
on the respective days, is worth
two hours of university or col
lege credit, according to informa
tion received from W. G. Beattie,
assistant director of the division.
The classes will first meet during
the weeg beginning March 25,
when registration may be made.
Dr. H. W. Bernard, assistant
professor of education at the Uni
versity of Oregon, will teach the
course on "Social Education."
Meeting each Monday evening
from 7:15 to 9:15 o'clock, the
course will Include lectures on
the contribution of sociological
principles and findings to the
improvement of educational prac
tices. The structure and function
ing of society, as a background
for the study and evaluation of
education in its varied forms will
also be discussed.
Meeting on Tuesday evenings
at 7:15 will be the course, "Ore
gon School Law and Oregon Sys
tem of Education." An analysis
of the Oregon school systet and
of the laws on which the system
is based will be given. The course.
a prerequisite for which is junior
standing, will give attention to the
problems of Oregon schools, plans
proposed for their solution, the

test for Oregon State college for
estry students was approved to
day by Governor Sprague.
"One of the absolutely essen
tial parts of a sound forestry pro
gram includes fire protection,"
Sprague said. "We certainly can
not hope to maintain our present
position or improve this position
if our principal capital asset is
dissipated and lost through fire,
no matter what the cause."
