DeGroot. head football coach
at San Jose State college for sev
en jears, resigned today to become
grid mentor and head of the phys
ical education department at Ro
chester university, Rochester, NY.
The resignation wilt be effective
April 1, DeGroot Informed college
authorities by telephone here to
day. He is in Rochester.
DeGroot's teams, for which the
veteran Glenn "Pop" Warner of
Stanford and Temple university
fame has been acting In an ad
visory capacity, have won 3 6
games, lost three and tied one in
the last three years. The team
was undefeated and untied in
1139 and had the highest scoring
record of any major eleven In the
nation.

Fenske, tacking a biasing last
quarter on to the sizzling early
pace set by Blaine Rideout. won
the 15th running of the Wana
maker mile tonight before a sell
out crowd of 16.000 at Madison
Square Garden in 4 minutes 7.4
seconds, beating Glenn Cunning
ham by three yards. The time was
the fastest ever recorded in the
garden.
Not only was it the fastest in
dividual mile the garden ever has
seen, but it probably also was the
fastest collective effort seen any
where, on board track or cinders.
Cunningham, running in this
event for the last time In his
career, turned in a second-place
4:07.7 that would have been good
