Paw Perkins was having a heck of a time with little Gertrude,
Dick Tracy wasn't born, the OSC Rooks eked out a 21-17 win from
Salem high and Idaho's Vandals smothered the Beavers 41-23.
The Cougars nosed out Oregon 32-20, Henry Corbett announced
he'd run for governor, the Salem high Clarion was awarded a cup as
the best paper in schools with less than 600 registration, WU out
pointed the Portland YMCA 48-40 as Scales tanked 17 and Oregon
won from WSC 34-32.
Oregon State came back to crush Idaho 40-27. Dr. O. F. Willing
and Don Moe of Portland were named to the US Walker cup team.
Killer Burke was reported seen in the northwest and Oregon nicked
the Vandals 40-37.
Seven Inches of snow fell in Salem. Tillie the Toiler was giving
Mac the cold shoulder, Salem high smacked Uni high of Eugene 27-9
as John Bone bucketed nire, Idaho scored a 41-3 4 win over Oregon
and WSC beat OSC again, 28-27.
Spears Hired, 8 Alarms, Camera Wins 1st. ,
Back in January of 1930 the Salem city pappas were figuring a
way to finance the removal of the city's snowfall. Southern Cal was
rocked by earthquakes, Silverton golfers were arranging a snow tour
nament and WU trounced Oregon 40-30 as Cardinal caged 12.
Eight fire alarms were answered by Salem firemen in one day as
citizens overstoked stoves and furnaces in efforts to combat the "un
usual weather," OSC walloped the Huskies 34-24 and Oregon City
shellacked the Vikings 3 4-18.
A silver thaw was predicted for Salem, Clarence W. Spears signed
a five-year contract at Oregon, the Huskies turned the tables on OSC,
36-24. the naval limitation session of world powers got under way in
London and Bolivia and Paraguay were on the verge of open warfare.
Toots and Casper weren't any younger than they are today, the
Oregon frosh whipped Salem 42-22, the Mexican government ordered
Its entire legation out of Moscow, Gene Sarazen won the Agua Callen
te open tourney and Primo Camera scored a first-round knockout of
Big Boy Peterson in his American debut.

Ten Janaaries ago Harold Hauk netted nine points as WU beat

none other than Sgt. Kenneson,
the mean marine from Gold Hill,
and Pete Belcastro, ruthless ruf
fian from Klamath Falls.
Until recently one of the top
bronco busters on the rodeo cir
cuit and still considered a top
hand at steer roping and bulldog
ging, Dude Chick is a buddy of
Gene Autry, the singing cowboy
of the flickers. The Dude is a
bit heftier than Brother Bobby,
and a little taller, but the two
otherwise resemble each other
closely enough to be twins.
Knowing the team tussle will
tax the ability of the best arbiter
in the business, Promotor Herb
Owen is making every effor to ac
quire the services of the old
faithful, Harry Elliott, to work it.
The team go will be backed up
with an hour struggle between
Ernie Piluso, Portland Italian,
and Herb Parks, one of the best

tall, consistent men from
Oregon State college, front run

ence northern dirlsion basketball
race, submerged the University of
Idaho Vandals beneath a 20 to 18
score tonight.
It was Idaho's seventh confer
ence defeat and the sixth rlctory
for Oregon State, which has lost
but one game, that to Washington
State college.
A strategy of stalling, which
went against them In the first
half and left Idaho leading at the
midpoint, 14 to 10, paid dividends
for the OSC Bearers midway in
the final period by tempting the
anxious Vandals to fouL
Idaho was nerer behind In that
opening stanza, although State
tied the score at 3 -all and 8-all.
Both teams departed radically
from the slam-bang northern divi
sion style to maneurer for certain
shots and check closely on de
fense. The Bearers won the war of
waiting with brilliant defensive
play through 15 minutes of the
second half, holding Idaho point
less while they edged up to take
a 15-14 lead on Valentl's field
goal and free throw.
The Staters, themselves, had
gone scoreless for seven minutes,
Hunter at last breaking from the
foul line to tally aa he raced un
der the basket.
Indiridual scoring honors went
to Otis Hilton, Idaho, with seren
tallies. The Mandic brothers,
Frank and John, scored five each
to top Oregon State.

Pacific coast conference swim
ming champions from the Univer
sity of Oregon paced the Webfoots
to a 43 to 32 victory over the 1939
champions from the University of
Washington before 1500 shouting
fans today.
Sherman Wetmore, backstroke
and free-style ace, Jack Dallas,
breast stroke expert, and Pierce
Mallory, free-style specialist,
helped account for 22 of the win
ner's points, and figured in the
two tank marks which were brok
en. Although the final score was
decisive, the meet wasn't decided
until the final event the 400
yard relay. A win for Washington
in that event would have turned
the tide to the Huskies, as they
trailed only 3 6-32 going into the
finals.

Uairerslty of Oregon, defending
its basketball championship In the
northern dirlsion of the Pacific
Coast conference, regained some
of Its championship form tonight
to defeat the University of Wash
ington, 4 7 to 32, evening a two
game series.
Oregon's rlctory was a first
class example of the ralue of long
arms in basketball. By shifting
his starting lineup to Include six
foot, seren Inch Hank Anderson,
of Hlnes, Ore., and Archie Mar
shlk, with a matching reach, in
place of comparatively medium
sized Pavalunas and Ted Sarpola,
Coach Howard Hobson gave bis
team Just enough floor advantage
to reverse the Friday night re
sult, in which the favored Oregon
lans dropped the series opener.
Tonight, Oregon scored first on
a basket in the opening minute by
Captain John Dick, shifted from
center to forward, a minute later,
Washington evened the count, but
Oregon promptly pulled away and
Washington never made another
serious threat. After three min
utes, the score was 8-3; with 12
minutes left in the half. It was 15
7, and five minutes before the
midway bell, it was 22-9. Wash
ington came back with a little
strength to close the gap to 27-14
at the rest period.
The second half opened in a
burst of scoring that put Oregon
ahead, 35-22, after five minutes.
Washington then made its last
bid, bringing the count to 41-30,
but could do not better before the
end of the game. Washington was
shooting wildly at the finish.
Townsend, Oregon guard, was
high for the evening with 13
points, followed by Dick with 12.
The teams resume play at Eu
gene next Friday In another two
game series.

annual Catholic high school tour
nament scheduled to be held in
the Unirersitr of Portland gym,
February 2, 3 and 4, by reason
of their rlctorles orer four of the
participating high school clubs,
Columbia Prep. St. Mary's of
Bearerton, St. Mary's of Eugene
and Sacred Heart of Salem.
Ten Catholic high school teams
will take part in the tournament.
On the opening night the Mt. An
gel Preps meet the Astoria Star of
the Sea club. Scheduled for the
same night are Sacred Heart of
Salem and St. Stephens of Port
land; St. Mary's of The Dalles
and St. Mary's of Eugene; and
Bearerton and Columbia Prep.
St. John's of Milwaukie and St.
Mary's of Medford both draw a
bye.
Mt.. Angel has taken part In
the Catholic high tournament
since its start in 1936, and that
year got one man on the all-star
team. In 1936 they took third
place and a trophy and placed one
member on all-star team. In
1937 they ended in fourth place
and receired another trophy. Two
years ago they merited honorable
mention and one man on second
team while last year they won
their third trophy by winning
from St. Mary's of Eugene and
Astoria but lost to Medford.

Third game of the Wlllamette
Oregonians hoop series went to
the Oregonians, 48 to 39. here
last night, giving the Eugene In
dependent team, which corets the
Oregon AAU championship, a
tjro-to-one edge orer the local
collegians.
Willamette took the first of
the series, 44-42; the Oregonians
the second, 63-30.
The Bearcats held the talented
ex-Oregons well in check the first
half, which ended 20-17 In faror
of the Eugene team, but with
rugged Gord Wright muscling his
way into the hoop for a trio of
cripples and caging fire of six
charity flips, the Oregonians out
sped them in the second canto.
Sam Gallaher opened the scor
ing with a brace of buckets, on
the first two shots fired by the
Salem collegians, girlng them a
4-0 adrantage. Serenteen minutes
of the first half ticked by before
Anet, Gale, Jobanson & Co. over
took the Bearcats, doing it on
rebound buckets by Anet and
Gale to go to the front, 14.-13.
The Oregonians were never
headed from there, and ran the
advantage up to 42-30 at one
point In the game. Otto Skopll
and Howard Eberly were the only
'Cats consistent on their (astnfr
in the second half, each netting
a trio of two-pointers. Skoiiil
turned in top dunking perform
ance for the locals, 10 points,
while Gord Wright's 11, all gar
nered in the second session, was
high for the game.
All-American Laddie Gale was
far off his stride, gathering but
two baskets In 17 attempts and
missing the only two free tries
be had. He, and Sum Gallaher of
the 'Cats, were whistled from. the
contest.

divisions of a minor sports dual
meet that provided one surprise
when Dwight Macy, Idaho 148
pound grappler, won a decision
over Martin Packard, WSC north
west champion.
State's Cougars won the wres
tling portion of the program, 20
fencing, six bouts to three; fresh
to 14; the swimming, 48 to 27;
man swimming, S3 to 8, and
freshman exhibition wrestling,
220 to 10.
Bob Thornfeldt, Cougar dis
tance star, won three swimming
erents the 220-yard freestyle,
160-yard backstroke and the. 440
yard freestyle.
Idaho won four of the eight
wrestling bouts, but only one by
