Mrs. Schenck's husband snd three other men were also I j rescued as a whole flotilla of the barges were driven ashore. 20 Job Placement Offices Show Gain Claims for Unemployment Drop 38.4 Per Cent in 11 Months Twenty of Oregon's 21 state employment offices showed a 68 per cent Increase in new Jobs for the first 11 months of 1939, when compared with 1938, with unem ployment compensation claims dropping 88.4 per cent, figures released here Wednesday dis closed. In Marshfield, where lumber ing expanded earlier. Job place ments dropped 8.2 per cent from the 1938 record of 4405. but last year'a 8044 Jobless claims fell to 310Z. The Portland office continued at the top this year with 25,194 new Jobs followed closely by Sa lem with 19,255. Klamath Falls' 10,753 placements held third place with 81.6 per cent gain. Eu gene overtook Marshfield to gain fourth rank with 6098 Jobs. Albany was fifth with 5232. Hood River 4511. Marshfield 4040, Pendleton 4012, LaGrande 2762 and Astoria 8584. In pri vate placements Klamath Falls ranked second with 1858 Jobs while Newport replaced Pendle ton among the first ten. In filing new unemployment claims Portland had 25.663. or about 44 per cent of the state's total of 88,293 for the first 11 months. At this time last year Portland had tiled 41,282 or 43.6 per cent of the state's 94,501. In amount of benefits paid by the unemployment compensation commission Marshfield was sec ond to Portland, while. Salem, Klamath Falls, Medford and Ore gon City districts came in order. Ontario paid the least in 1938 with $40,043, but Tillamook has the honor so far this year with $32,019. Out-of-state claimants have taken $237,335 this year as against $54,596 last year.
