Duplicated for Sunday Program at Church Repeated because of popular Interest, the impressire memorial services which opened the state American. Legion conrention here last August, will be grf en Sunday night at the First Methodist church, starting at 7:30. The setting used in the original presentation, including a replica of the tomb of the Unknown Sol dier in front of a backdrop of the skyline of Washington, DC, with the Washington monument, will be mored to the church. The backdrop .was painted by Merrill Ames, nnder supervision jf Charles Val Clear at the Salem Art center. The program will include pipe or organ selections by Prof. T. S. Roberts, rocal numbers by Dick Barton and the American Legion auxiliary trio and a brief talk by Rer. James Osborne, past depart ment chaplain. Wreaths will be placed by Art Johnson, post com mander, and Mrs. O. E. Palma teer for the auxiliary. The na tional guard : will furnish the honor guard. y C. V. Marion County Tax Level of 1939 Marion county will spend $1,060,864.40 during 1940. and to do so will tax itself to the extent of $589,874.40 $2101 more than last year, according to official computation of the county budget for the next fiscal year made yesterday by Henry Mattson, county court deputy, following final approval of the list of expenditures by the county court budget commit tee Wednesday afternoon. O Total budget appropriations, according to the official figures. amount to I9S2.S74.40. which. when combined with an allowance of $108,290 for estimated delin quencies, makes the grand total for expenditures. Total receipts are estimated at $372,490. $65,130 abore last year, and surplus ts shown at $97,500. a full $47,500 aboTe 1938. The tax Increase a bore last year's tax of $587,773.40 is ex pected to be absorbedVIn the coun ty's gain in appraisal, with the re sult that the tax bill per individ ual is not expected to differ ma terially from 1938. The budget committee at its fi nal meeting passed the list of ex penditures exactly as It had been drawn np at the body's prelimin ary meeting on November 3. with yie exception of three minor chan ges which resulted In a total in crease of $230. It took coxnizance. however, of a decrease of over $13,000 in the general state' and elementary school taxes of which brought the estimate in that cate gory down from $121,000 to fl03.C54.42. - Breakdown of the new budget shows . total expenditures in the general fund .reaching $357,001, of which $302,001 is total re-1 Quired and $55,000 Included to cover estimated delinquency. De ducting revenues and surplus, the remaining tax levy for the fund la S15C.751. The roads and highways fund la set at $2(0,000. for which esti mated revenues of. $171,200 and surplus of $52,800 In large part account, leaving only $3C.300 for the levy. - Market road improve ment requirement and tax are both set at $97,500. and the coun ty school fund remains at $198- 340 In accordance with final school census figures submitted to the final budgets meeting by County Superintendent Agnes C Booth. The library fund is a hund- reth of this amount. $1983.40. The old age pension fund, to which are added state moneys for payment of old age benefits will require a tax of $99,000. The dog fund remains stable at $7760. District Attorney -Lyle J. Page yesterday rendered opinion - re quested by the budget committee during Its recent session. In which is asked whether the law makes mandatory the levying of a tax for all school districts, regardless ef tatr ietire la the natter and their funds on hand. The district attorney held that the law la mandatory, and that a tax win have: to be levied In 17 districts to bring total income for 1940 to the level required by law of $C20. Speed in completing the task was credited partly to the lack of expected rains. - The project, designed to pro tect lowlands along the "old river bed" east of the present liver channel from a point . approxi mately opposite Eola, was built under a contract awarded to the Kuckenberg construction compa ny of Portland. The task Involved 24,012 man-hours of work and the placing of 24,000 tons of rock.' The revetment extends a distance of 4062 feet. , .
