to buy wheat in the final hoar
of trading today lifted price to
the highest point in six week,
within about a cent of the war
boom peaks of September i. ,
Some of the buying ; was in
sympathy with a sharp upturn of
soy bean prices which caused
establishment of dollar-a-bushel
quotations for the first time since
March, 1938.' A rally In securi
ties and the persistent hard win
ter wheat belt drought were fac
tors In the wheat pit.
After declining as much as
cent in early dealings, wheat ral
lied to ; around previous closing
-figures then pushed upward to
gains of 1 cents from early
lows. Top prices were 88 for De
cember and 87 for May, A last
minute reaction due " to v profit
taking cut the gains but final
prices were -lM above yester
day, December 87-, May

Weather over the bard winter
wheat belt was clear to partly
cloudy with no precipitation of
consequence In sight. Some fear
was expressed that cold weather
might damage weak wheat plants.
Export sales of , Canadian wheat
were 1,500,000 bushels. Export
Interests estimated approximately
1,250,000 bushels hare been ta
ken by the United Kingdom the
past two days but this could not
fee confirmed.

stock rose on the Portland turkey
market today, selllnr la limited

remained 2 to 4 cents less for
big birds.
Bayers offered 15 cents for
large toms and II to 17 cents for
smaller sixes. The buying price
for hens was quoted at 18 cents
with- -a one-cent premium ' on
smaller staff.

The Allen Fruit company vir
tually dosed its 1839 paek this
week, although a small amount
of dried prunes are yet to be
placed in cans; Company officials
said a detauea report of the 1989
pack would not be available for
several days.
An air of festivity was added
to closing day when about 150
workers gathered In the plant

Virtually all of the prune oaek
will be sent to England. Prunes.

Sales Show Gains
PORTLAND, Nov. S-HTV-Dun's
business review said today last
month's department store sales in
the Portland area were 4.5 per
cent ahead of a year ago but 12
per cent less than September.
Early effects of the war were
credited with causing the unusual
September spurt .Wholesale busi
ness registered 5 to 10 per cent
gains over October, 1938.
