Small lota of graded quar ter blood combing bright fleece wools brought 48 to 60 cents, in the grease, which was steady compared with last week'g nominal quotations. Northwest Farmers Reduce Wheat Smut CORVALLIS, Oct. 25-(ffy-A federal report received by Oregon State college today Indicated northwest farmers had reduced the amount of wheat subject to smut dockage to 5 per cent, com pared with 35 to 40 per cent in former years. Improved cultural methods and seed treatment accompanied by developments at the branch experiment station in Moro were largely responsible for the achiev-ment. Tom Turkey Market Drops PORTLAND, Oct. 25-(fl)-Tho torn turkey market dropped to a record low of 15 cents a pound here today, a cent below previ ous prices in some spots. Buying Causes Stocks to Rise War Baby Issues Favored, Gains Are General Through List NEW YORK, Oct. 25.-()-Buy-ing came into the stock market in volume today and leading issues were hiked up fractions to 2 points or more. Steels, rails, motors, alrcrafts and automobile accessory shares were most favored, but gains were general throughout the list. The Associated Press aevrage of 60 representative stocks moved up .4 of a point at 63.9, its highest level since Nov. 12, 1938. Transfers totaled 1,691,200 shares compared with 1,163,330 yesterday. Brokers said many traders who hare avoided positions recently came in on the purchasing side, impressed with the market's ac tion on the past fortnight, its strength In the face of liquidation from abroad, and the apparent laying of the "peace offensive" bugaboo. Domestic news waa favorable, including a long list of company statements showing Improved earnings In the third quarters. Rails were aided by preliminary estimates last week's carloading figures would show av steep ad vance. The early closing date is neces sary so that county conservation offices will have time to submit all applications for 1939 AAA pay ments by March 31, 1940, said Will Steen, state committee chair man. Specifications for the 1940 con servation program In Orepon have been drawn up, Steen said, and lt is expected that the new hand books explaining next year's prac tices will be ready for distribution by the first of January. The 1940 agricultural c o n s e r vation pro gram will begin officially on De cember 1, 1933, and end Novem ber 30, 1940. This year's AAA range program will not end until December 31, but in 1940 it will terminate on the same date as the farm program, according to Steen. It is expected that approximate ly 31,000 applications for 1939 conservation payments will be made by Oregon farmers, said N. C. Donaldson of Corvallls, state executive. The payments are made as an aid to carrying on soil build ing and soil conserving practices, or for keeping within wheat, pota to, or commercial vegetable allot ments. Conservation payments to Ore gon farmers cooperating with the 1939 AAA program will total about 33,483,000, Donaldson add ed. Other federal farm payments, including those for the sugar beet program and the wheat price ad justment program will probably bring the year's total agricultural benefits In Oregon to more than five million dollars. August was the record month when 43,954 tons went through the locks.
