Recently Buoyant Leaders
Close Down Fractions, ,
Few Make Gains
NEW YORK, Oct. MVThe
war-baying fever cooled in today's
stock market and recently buoy
ant leaders took a rest in lower
territory.
While there were few weak
spots In the list, closing declines
of tractions to & point or so pre
dominated. A smattering of mer
chandising, utility and specialty
Issues : managed to emerge with
modest plus signs.
. It was the second slowest ses
sion of the week, transfers for
the. fire hoars totalling 786,880
shares against 1,161.249 the day
before. The Associated Press av
erage of 60 stocks was off .2 of
a point at 63.
Transfers Confused
Wall Street apparently was
more confused than ever regard
ing what Is going on in Europe.
Failure of the Scandinavian con
ference to bring -out any peace
proposal led some to wonder
whether an armistice move might
come from other sources.
Forecasts that next week's steel
mill operations should equal If
not exceed those of the current
week found stocks In this cate
gory unresponsive. Rails jogged
along indifferently in the face
Income figures. Excellent corpor
ation earnings statements, extra
dividends and other economic
Items propped shares here and
there, but left the market as i a
whole nnenthused.
Up 1, to around 3 were pre
ferred issues ot American For
eign Power, Electric Power
Light and Thermold. Improved
were General Foods, Sears Roe
buck, Montgomery Ward, Philip
jnuiris ana xveimecuit.

Wool in Boston
BOSTON. Oct. 20. (AP) (USDA)
The wool market in Boston was very quiet
today. Quotations were unchanged but
were largely nominal due to the small vol
ume of business transacted. Occasional
inquiries were received for small Iota of
fine territory wools, but bids were gen
erally lower than most holders were wil
ling to consider.
Business Holds

PORTLAND, Oct. 20-tirVDun,s
"Review said today business in the
Portlan darea held about even

for the year.
Five per cent increases were
shown by wholesale drug and
men's clothing firms for the year,
despite Increasing prices and re

Wheat Market
Shows Losses
Buyers Shun Pit; Selling
Pressure Is Light;
Drought Factor
CHICAGO, Oct. 20-(1?3-Buyrs
shunned the wheat pit today be
cause of the unsettled European
sitnatlon, lower trend of securi
ties and availability of large Cana
dian and Argentine surpluses.
Losses of a cent a bushel or
more at time sresulted although
the market was under only light
selling pressure, mostly from pro
fit takers and shorts. Persistent
drought in the southwest tended
to check selling.
Wheat closed -l cent lower
than yesterday, December 83
, May 83-.
British buying of Canadian
grain Increased although the
amounts taken since the war have
been small. Exporters disclosed
3,000,000 bushels of wheat were
taken yesterday, bringing aggre
gate, purchases the past two days
to almost 6,000,000 bushels. In
addition about 100,000 bushels of
oats and some rye and barley hare
been sold to the United Kingdom.
Foreign reports indicated the
British and Canadian governments
would attempt to check grain
price fluctuations.
This week Chicago shippers
cleared 16,000 barrels of flour,
1,232,000 bushels of corn and 1,
231,000 bushels of soy beans to
Canadian ports oil the lakes.

Wool Trade Slow
During Past Week
BOSTON. Oct. 20()-The Com
mercial Bulletin will say tomor
row: "The wool trade has passed
through another drab week, dur
ing which prices have been sett
ling a bit lower, although It is
difficult to make quotations with
any assurance in the absence of
sales. Best class III fine wools
have probably sunk to the level
of about $1, clean basis, against
SI. 10 at the peak. "
"While the basis upon which
Britain has purchased the Austra
lian and New Zealend clips has
been announced at 10.75 pence
(sterling) for the Australian and
9.8 pence for the New Zealand,
equivalent to IS. 4 pence in Au
stralian and 12.25 pence in New
Zealand, this Is the average price
at which the clips are taken over
and does not indicate at what
basis, if and when, wools may be
released to this country for 'civil
ian purposes. The prices will be
carefully considered of course in
this country and Australian wools
priced more or less accordingly.
"Cape wools of fine quality are
being bought for this 'country in
moderate volume of fully 10 cents
a pound, clean basis, unaer mis
market currently.
"Little business has been done
In the west this week and manu
facturers of tops, yarns and goods
report little new , business, al
though deliveries continue freely.
"Mohair Is iijoderate request

Oregon Hop Mart
Is at Standstill
PORTLAND, Oct. 20-(JP)-lh6
federal agricultural marketing
service said today there were no
spot sales or contracts on the
Oregon hop market this week.
Further commitments were de
layed by producers pending stipu
lation of allotments under the hop
marketing agreement. The de
mand was slow for both foreign
and domestic Interests.
The 1939 crop values remained
unchanged from last week and
1938 suplies held by the sta
bilization corporation were quoted
at 25 cents a pound. Values on
older growths were nominal be
cause of the absence of trading.
